Let neighbors know: the Philadelphia Water Department is planning construction of Green Stormwater Infrastructure in your area within the next 3 to 9 months.
Dear Resident,
The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) has gone through a public bid process to select contractors to construct a Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) project in your area within the next 3 to 9 months. This public bidding process comes after years of outreach in the community to get feedback, build support, and improve the design of this green system.
This project is part of the City of Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters plan, a 25-year initiative to improve the quality of our waterways by installing GSI in our neighborhoods, coupled with traditional infrastructure like collection, pumping, and wastewater treatment plant enhancements.
GSI combines natural vegetation, such as plants and trees, with engineered collection systems to capture and collect rainwater flowing from hard surfaces, like streets and sidewalks.
Native vegetation is planted on the top of a GSI system to soak up water while the stone bed underground is used to store as much stormwater runoff as possible. GSI systems built in Philadelphia are currently keeping over three billion gallons of polluted runoff out of local rivers and creeks each year.
