Latest Results from Enhanced Monitoring Show Spill Did Not Impact Philadelphia Drinking Water
Philadelphia’s water remains safe to drink and use.
PWD Bureau of Laboratory Services supported independent labs in confirming our drinking water was never impacted.
While the City informed residents on March 28 that all drinking water in Philadelphia is safe to drink and would not be impacted by a chemical spill in Bristol Township, Bucks County, we have continued enhanced water quality monitoring to provide updated data and reassurance for our customers:
- The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) was first alerted about the spill on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
- From March 25 through April 4, our water quality experts collected over 200 samples as part of an enhanced monitoring response.
- Samples were collected throughout PWD’s Baxter Water Treatment Plant (WTP), from the Delaware River all the way through to the entry point of treated drinking water into the drinking water distribution system.
- No chemicals of concern from the Bristol Township spill were detected in any of the 200-plus samples collected by PWD and analyzed by independent, accredited laboratories, confirming that Philadelphia’s drinking water was not impacted by the chemical spill.
We worked with the PWD Bureau of Laboratory Services to summarize the enhanced sampling program we put in place alongside all the standard water quality testing we do every day:
