Live in 19141 and want to be sure Philly's water is top-quality?

People often ask us this question, and we love answering it.

We know it's safe because we test throughout our system.

After treatment at one of our three drinking water plants, your tap water travels through infrastructure across the city. Philadelphia has more than 3,000 miles of water mains that deliver top-quality drinking water to customers like you.

While the drinking water travels through water mains, we collect samples from faucets at places such as firehouses, police stations, and pumping stations to ensure the water we deliver still meets state and federal quality standards when it reaches your tap. We conduct more than 400 of these tests a month!

A Closer Look: Residual Chlorine

A chlorine test is done throughout the system. It ensures that the chlorine added at plants remains at levels that keep water fresh and safe while staying within regulations.

Nose v2

Top customer question: Why does my tap water smell like a pool sometimes?

The smell of chlorine means your water is safe and treated to remove harmful organisms. You can reduce the smell by keeping a pitcher of fresh water in the refrigerator. This also reduces the earthy odor sometimes produced by algae in the rivers during spring.
