Water Dept. Ecological Restoration Project Starting at Saylor Grove
We are beginning an ecological restoration project at Saylor Grove on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. The park will be will be closed to remove silt and sediment that has accumulated in the ponds over the last five years.
The following streets will be impacted:
- Partial closure of the right lane of W. Rittenhouse Street between Wissahickon Ave. and Lincoln Drive
- Several parking spots along Rittenhouse Street
Project Anticipated Length:
- 2-3 weeks (est. Oct 13 - Oct 27)
About the Project:
-
Saylor Grove is a 3.25-acre park in the Fairmount Park system, located at Wissahickon Avenue and Lincoln Drive, adjacent from Wissahickon Valley Park.
- The site is home to our first ecological restoration project, a .70-acre stormwater treatment wetland constructed in 2006 to address urban runoff and bank erosion along the Monoshone Creek. The creek flows through the Historic Rittenhouse Town before joining Wissahickon Creek.
- The project series is part of a Clean Water Act mandate.
- By repairing the wetlands and removing sediment in the park's step ponds, we are improving the quality of water flowing from the surrounding neighborhood before it enters local waterways.

About Green Infrastructure
-
Green stormwater projects use plants, trees, and stone to capture and filter stormwater.
- Green systems can be found in neighborhoods across the city. They are part of the Green City, Clean Waters program. Philadelphia launched the 25-year infrastructure effort in 2011 to improve the health of our waterways.
- Today, green systems keep billions of gallons of polluted runoff out of local rivers and creeks each year.
