Chlorine Keeps Your Water Safe

Scientist Monitoring Water

The crystal clear, high-quality tap sent to your home is fresh water harvested from our rivers that goes through a process of settling, disinfection, and filtering.

This process includes routine testing — at plants and all the way to taps — to ensure we’re using just the right amount of chlorine to keep your water safe on its way to your home.

Chlorine is a very efficient way of keeping drinking water safe from organisms like bacteria.

When public health experts first started using chlorine in water over a century ago, it saved tens of thousands of lives each year. Today, health agencies recognize chlorine as one of the most effective ways to protect public health from disease-causing organisms that can be found in rivers and streams. That’s why state and federal laws require the disinfection of all public water supplies.

We take care to ensure the levels of chlorine in your water are just right.

Our lab technicians visit sites all over the city to collect drinking water samples from fire and police stations, pumping stations, and more. We do over 420 monthly tests throughout the system to constantly ensure the levels stay within regulations.
