1000 Books Challenge at
Lower Merion Library System
We’ve all heard it’s important to read to your child, but how important is it? A study from Ohio State’s Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy found that “young children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to…even kids who are read only one book a day will hear about 290,000 more words by age 5 than those who don’t regularly read books with a parent or caregiver” (Grabmeier 2019).
How does the 1000 Books Challenge work? First, visit your local Lower Merion Library to register and receive a Beanstack Badge Book!
Track your child's progress in the Badge Book with the colorful milestone stickers. Then enter the number of books you read with your child in the Beanstack website to get virtual badges and reward messages. For every 100 books read, come to the library to receive a Brag Tag. At 250, 500, and 750 books your child will receive a free book. When you complete all 1000 books your child will receive another free book plus a graduation certificate!
