Township Business Tax Information
The annual business tax deadline this year will be April 15, 2024. Businesses are subject to business privilege and mercantile taxes on any 2023 gross receipts allocable or attributable to the Township. Extensions for filing to October 15TH can be requested from the Township by letter. These requests must be received by the April due date and must include payment of at least 80% of the balance due. Interest will be charged on any balance paid after the April due date.
Businesses with employees, partners, S corporation shareholders and self-employed individuals are also required to file Local Services Tax (LST) returns with the Township. The LST is a $52 per person/per year tax imposed on anyone working or generating net profits within the Township. Employers are responsible for withholding the tax from employees and remitting it to the Township quarterly. Self Employed individuals and business owners must pay their own LST in the first quarter. The first quarter LST returns are due on April 30, 2024.
If you need to register your business with the Township or find tax forms and more information about Township business taxes, please visit the Township website www.lowermerion.org/businesstax.
Finally, the Township is conducting a pilot electronic filing program for Business Privilege and Mercantile tax forms. Returns for tax years 2021, 2022 and 2023 can now be filed electronically through the PA LITE portal. When filing electronically through the portal, payments can be made via ACH. If you would like to register to efile your Township business privilege/mercantile tax returns, please email businesstax@lowermerion.org. Please provide your Township tax account number and business name.
The Lower Merion Health Advisory Council invites you to attend a Free Community CPR & AED Training in partnership with Narberth Ambulance. Registration is required and limited.

Fire Pit Safety
...from the desk of the Fire Chief
While the use of fire pits, whether store-bought or built with stone/brick and mortar, is permitted within the Township, open burning is not.
Please see the tips below before you build a fire this season:
- The fire pit must be in a safe location and at a distance of at least 15 feet away from any combustible material.
- Only dry, properly seasoned wood is to be used. If excessive smoke is generated, the fire should be extinguished.
- Never walk away or leave a fire pit unattended and always have a way to extinguish the fire readily available for use -a hose attached to an operable faucet or a fire extinguisher, as an example.
- Loose rocks or stones placed on the ground are not considered acceptable as a "fire pit".
- Never have a fire pit going during periods of high winds or extremely dry conditions.
What is NEVER permitted:
Open burning is NOT permitted in Lower Merion Township! Leaves, trash, and brush should never be burned under any circumstances.
If you have any questions on this or any other fire safety issues, please contact the Fire Department Office, at 610-645-6190, for more information or to schedule a safety inspection to determine the best location for a fire pit on your property.
 Pilot Community Compost Program
The Township is gauging interest in a pilot community compost program. Participants in the program will collect their household’s food scraps and other organic waste, then drop it off in a bin at a nearby community collection point at their convenience. Residents who are interested in being notified of any current or future pilot locations in their neighborhood are encouraged to complete the interest form.
City Nature Challenge
City Nature Challenge is a multi-day event where everyday citizens in cities around the world engage in a friendly competition to record the biological observations (plants and animals) using the iNaturalist app. These observations are used by scientists to learn about and promote biodiversity in urban and suburban settings. The Philadelphia-area CNC will be from 26 April-4 May 2024. Lower Merion Sustainability Ambassadors will be hosting several events throughout the month of April to help residents join and participate in this exciting challenge!
Main Line Greenway Group Bike Ride
Join Lower Merion Sustainability Ambassadors on April 27, 2024 at 9:00 am for a family-friendly, social 7-mile bike ride along the Cynwyd Heritage Trail. This is an opportunity to explore several sections of the planned Main Line Greenway (MLG), utilizing a low-stress route allowing safe travel for biking. In a town where there's not a lot of room for bike infrastructure, the MLG provide a more comfortable environment through low-speed roads through various neighborhoods.
