 Lower Merion Sustainability Ambassadors
Plan for a Busy Earth Month
Lower Merion Township Sustainability Ambassadors are looking forward to a busy Earth Month in April. The calendar of community Earth Month events, which can be found at https://www.lowermerion.org/EarthMonth, is full of opportunities for environmental enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy nature, learn about important environmental issues and solutions, volunteer to improve the environment, and recycle unwanted items.
Earth Day is April 22, 2024. This annual event, first held on April 22, 1970, is celebrated around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year, Lower Merion Township is showcasing environmentally friendly events happening all month long.
Events organized by Lower Merion Township Sustainability Ambassadors include a bioblitz to collect photos of wild plants and animals throughout the Township, a group bike ride to explore the Main Line Greenway, tree planting to increase canopy cover in parks and neighborhoods, and presentations to learn about the financial incentives to switch to clean energy in your home and the impacts of single-use plastic bags. The Earth Month calendar also includes family-friendly events organized by community organizations such as Riverbend Environmental Education Center, Bethel Community Gardens, PHS Tree Tenders, SHIFT Sustainable Goods + Services, Friends of Wynnewood Valley Park, Penn Wynne Civic Association and Merion Civic Association.
In addition to these fun events, Lower Merion Township Refuse Department’s Spring Clean Up Weekends (April 6-7, and April 20-21) offer an opportunity for residents to recycle or repurpose unwanted appliances, textiles, computers, bicycles, furniture, and more, while the Lower Merion Township Police Department offers a safe way to dispose of pharmaceuticals at the Drug Take Back event on April 27.
