The Care and Repair of Older Homes:
A Workshop Series
This winter and spring, the Lower Merion Conservancy, Narberth Borough Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB), and Lower Merion Township HARB and Historical Commission (HC) are offering three workshops to introduce residents to basic strategies for the maintenance and care of older homes. If you live in a historically designated home, own a home that is older, or are simply curious about the building materials common to homes, these workshops are for you!
The workshops are offered to the public free of charge. Three venues in Narberth and Lower Merion will host this movable feast of home maintenance information.
Window Workshop: Thursday, March 2, 7- 8:30 p.m.
Older wood windows are routinely replaced for all of the wrong reasons. This workshop will introduce the homeowner to common DIY repairs such as re-glazing, sash cord/chain replacement, and weatherstripping. Location: Narberth Community Building, East Wing, 80 Windsor Avenue. (Parking is located behind the building and is accessible from Haverford Avenue.)
Interior Plaster Workshop: Thursday, March 30, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Mortar Repointing Workshop: Thursday, April 27, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

The Importance of Renters Insurance
Recovering from a fire or other catastrophe can be a hectic, physically, and mentally draining process, which is only exacerbated by learning that you may not have the insurance coverage you need to replace all of your belongings. If you are a renter, your landlord will likely have insurance to protect the building you are living in, but your landlord’s policy won’t replace your personal possessions or pay for your living expenses while the building is being repaired. This is where the importance of renters insurance, sometimes referred to as tenant insurance, comes into play, often for mere dollars per month. While standard renters insurance policies generally provide certain liability protections, it also provides personal possession and additional living expense coverage should a fire occur. Standard renters insurance protects your personal belongings against damage from fire, smoke, and water used for extinguishment. To decide how much insurance to purchase, it’s recommended to create a home inventory with the value of all your personal possessions, including furniture, clothing, electronics, and even utensils and linens. This will also make filing an insurance claim faster and easier. Renters insurance policies may also reimburse you for the difference between any additional living or meal expenses over and above your normal living expenses, should damage from a disaster cause you to have to relocate while repairs are being made. Please contact a local insurance agent for more information and to make sure you have the coverage you need should a disaster strike.
