From its rivers, streams, wetlands and agricultural fields, Pennsylvania offers waterfowl – and waterfowl hunters – many diverse and appealing habitats. Through careful planning and habitat management, Pennsylvania has become one of the top states in the Atlantic Flyway, with ample hunting opportunities for Canada goose, mallards and wood ducks.
In this episode, Game Commission Marketing Director Matt Morrett discusses the biology and migrations of waterfowl in Pennsylvania with Nate Huck, Waterfowl Program Specialist for the Game Commission. As the agency’s Waterfowl Biologist, Nate’s main focuses throughout the year include post-season banding, waterfowl surveys and flyway communication with other states. He emphasized the importance of analyzing the banding and survey data to estimate survival and harvest rates, because both play a crucial role in proposing annual seasons and bag limits. ATTENTION WATERFOWL HUNTERS
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is seeking input on the proposed 2022-23 waterfowl hunting seasons, which can be found online here.
We want to hear your comments on these proposed seasons, whether in agreement with the proposed seasons or alternative suggestions.
Public comments will be accepted through March 20, 2022. Those interested can complete the comment form here and send via letter to Game Commission headquarters or via email at waterfowlcomments@pa.gov.
There will be a live broadcast discussing the proposed seasons on the Game Commission Facebook page on March 9th at 1pm. A recording will be available afterward. In addition, a waterfowl open house will take place at Middle Creek WMA on March 12th at 12pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with Game Commission Staff, see proposed seasons presented, and tour habitat work at Middle Creek WMA.
Every year, thousands of people flock to the Game Commission’s Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, which serves as a stopover for hundreds of thousands of migrating snow geese.
If you haven’t witnessed it before, we promise there is nothing quite like seeing thousands of snow geese take off at once and whiten the sky!
To increase your chances of seeing snow geese, plan to be on the lake at sunrise or sunset. To avoid larger crowds of people, consider visiting Middle Creek during the week. For more viewing tips and information about visiting Middle Creek watch this video.
Can’t make the trip to Middle Creek? Check out the snow geese migration virtually with the livestream here.

Thank you for being a Pennsylvania hunter, conservationist and voice for the future of hunting in PA.
