PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging (AAA) will again be administering the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. This program helps income-eligible older adults to supplement their diets with locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables by providing $25 in vouchers for use at area farmers markets.
Vouchers will be distributed on Tuesday, June 24, by a select group of sites in the AAA senior center network. The vouchers may be used through November 30 to purchase Pennsylvania-grown produce from participating vendors at farmers markets throughout Allegheny County.
To be eligible, you must be an Allegheny County resident age 60 or older (before December 31, 2025), meet income requirements ($28,953 annual gross income for a one-person household and $39,128 for a two-person household) and not live in a residential facility providing meals. Those who are eligible but unable to get to a senior center may designate a proxy to pick up and redeem the vouchers.
It is important to note that voucher availability is limited and will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis, with the opportunity to join a waiting list once vouchers have been exhausted. Allegheny County distributes these vouchers on behalf of the PA Department of Agriculture, and this year, there are particularly limited vouchers available. Specifically, the five $5 vouchers distributed this year returns the program to its pre-COVID funding level, as the program had been supplemented in recent years with additional federal funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. Also different this year, federal reduction in the funding available for this program has meant counties have received 25% fewer vouchers than in previous years.
Vouchers are meant to be a supplemental nutrition resource, not a means of assuring food security. If you know a senior experiencing food insecurity, please encourage them to call the SeniorLine to get connected to more comprehensive resources, like home delivered meals or a local Senior Center.
Eligible individuals may get vouchers between 9 AM and Noon from any participating site (with proof of age and county residency), which includes:
