Boiler House Demolition at Former Cheswick Power Plant Scheduled for March 2
PITTSBURGH – The following is being provided on behalf of the Springdale Borough Police Department:
Springdale Borough Police want to alert residents, businesses and commuters in the area of the former Cheswick Power Plant on Pittsburgh Street about the upcoming demolition of the Boiler House Building located inside the former Cheswick Power Station.
The demolition will occur on Sunday, March 2, 2025. At this time, the demolition is expected to take place between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. The timing will be finalized within 24 hours of the event. CPERG (the Cheswick Power Station property owner) and its contactor B&B Wrecking and Excavation Inc. will manage the event.
This operation requires the extensive closure of roads in and around the impacted area, and the implementation of detours and alternative travel routes will be in place for approximately six hours during the event. Detours are expected to begin at 8:30 am. Freeport Road and Pittsburgh Street will be completely closed from Low Grade Road in Harmar Township to Riddle Run Road in Springdale Township. Signs will be posted at the closures indicating alternative routes and uniformed police will also be on hand to assist and direct the motoring public accordingly.
There is no need for an evacuation zone during the demolition. However, the residents of the community have been told that, out of an abundance of caution, they should stay inside and “Shelter in Place” during the demolition and for 30 minutes after.
CPERG intends to demolish the building by conventional means. The boiler house will be pulled down using cables. No explosives will be used.
Media is asked to stage in the Dollar General parking lot, 494 Pittsburgh Street, for the duration of the demolition.
