Can home sharing help ease the housing crunch?
Portland needs more affordable housing. But construction is expensive and takes a long time. What if we used more of the housing we already have?
Home sharing is an old idea that's getting a new look because of a startling fact: Due to demographic trends, the Portland metro area has literally thousands of spare bedrooms sitting empty -- estimates range from 100,000 to over a million.
Home sharing offers significant benefits:

Renters pay less in rent. Savings average $8,400 a year.

Homeowners get extra income for renting a room. Average $9,600.

Many renters and homeowners work out arrangements where renters do some household chores in return for cheaper rent.

Moving from living outside into a home is rarely a straight line. The City maintains a system of shelters to help people stabilize, access support, and get back on their feet. Our monthly report documents numbers, which represents lives touched: people got into drug and alcohol treatment, found jobs, got job skills training, moved into transitional housing – one even got married.

The 2026 Safer Portland Grants help prevent and reduce violence through collaborative community-based prevention efforts. The Portland Office of Violence Prevention awarded $1M to 16 organizations doing violence prevention.
Beginning Friday, Sept. 11, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will close all southbound lanes of Interstate 5—all hours, all days -- for an estimated five weeks. The closure is for extensive repairs. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is working to mitigate these impacts and provide resources for you. Sign up for PBOT Traffic Advisories.
City Council news
On Thursday, September 3, Portland City Council unanimously approved a resolution that directs the City to identify and negotiate with a development partner for City-owned parcels surrounding the Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The resolution also acknowledges that an organization that fits the City's criteria, Albina Vision Trust, has already come forward with interest in these parcels and a vision for what to do with them.

Inclusion Assistant for Inclusion Services will directly support one or two individuals to provide assistance to participants of all ages with physical, developmental and/or emotional disabilities as they integrate into general recreation programs. Duties include adapting activities, maintaining a safe environment, and promoting a participant’s success in programs. Grants and funding
Eligible organizations can apply now for two years of unrestricted operating support as part of the Operating Support Grants program. Grant awards will range from $25,000 to $145,000 annually, with award amounts determined by factors outlined in the grant guidelines.
To be eligible, arts organizations must have a minimum budget of $150,000, three years of history providing arts experiences in Portland—including services for K-12 students and people in underserved communities—and meet other eligibility requirements described in the grant guidelines. Applications due Sept. 11, 2026 at noon.

Established more than 50 years ago, design regulations in Portland help to ensure that new development matches the neighborhood character and is built to last. Now, we have an opportunity to update and improve the design review process to encourage development while maintaining commitments to urban design.
Guided by a City Council Resolution and recommendations from the Design Review Reform Report, the Design Review Temporary Suspension Project will temporarily pause mandatory design review and replace it with a simpler process. This is the first step in a larger effort to improve design review over the long-term.
A set of proposals is heading to the Portland Planning Commission on Sept. 22. You are encouraged to attend the hearing and submit testimony for the Planning Commission.

Your Portland moment
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and Multnomah County Library are excited to announce the winners of the 2026 Bike to Books Design Contest. Imagination, color, and whimsy were abundant in this year's contest when Portland-area youth and adults submitted a record-breaking number of Bike to Books designs with 487 unique designs!
The Bike to Books program celebrates National Bike Month in May, inviting Multnomah County residents to design art for local bike lanes. Winners were selected from each of the four age categories: Pre-K to 2nd grade, 3rd to 6th grade, 7th to 12th grade, and adults. PBOT and Multnomah County Library staff reviewed and voted on all the entries.
