From the classroom to the community, De La Salle North Catholic High School students are learning the meaning of service in partnership with the Sunshine Division, a century-old nonprofit that provides immediate food relief to Portland metro families and individuals in need.
"It's full circle for me," said Portland Police Officer Rashida Saunders. "I was a kid, raised by a single mom, and we relied heavily on food boxes. So the fact that I'm able to provide emergency food assistance to my community—the same community I grew up in—and I get to do that now with students from the same high school that I graduated from, it's really amazing and an honor."

Habitat for Humanity is breaking ground on 50 new affordable townhomes for purchase in University Park, available to households earning up to 60% or 80% AMI. These 2-4 bedroom homes are subject to the N/NE Preference Policy, prioritizing applicants with historic ties to the area. The Portland Housing Bureau is supporting True North with Metro Housing Bond funds.
Council voted to restore $12 million in cuts to police, firefighters, transportation, and other services in the 2026-27 budget. This keeps 30 positions, including public safety support specialists, desk clerks, and 311 call takers. Also restores money for emergency rescue teams and police training.
The operation focused on maintaining a highly visible law enforcement presence in areas experiencing increased gun violence while combining proactive community engagement with targeted enforcement efforts aimed at violent offenders. Over the two-day mission, officers recovered seven firearms, made 11 arrests, issued seven citations, towed 10 vehicles, and conducted parole compliance checks.
As a new fiscal year begins, changes are being implemented across City shelter locations. The plan for the coming year includes some closures and consolidations, offers new service models, and retains key flexibility to adapt to changing need and demand. Preservation of alternative shelter units is prioritized, and the City's continued commitment to provide a safe bed every night for every person who will accept one remains steadfast, with overnight emergency shelter beds available at locations across Portland, with no referral required.
This year, motorcyclists account for 11 of Portland's 25 traffic fatalities—more than 50% above the four-year average and double the number recorded at this point last year. In addition to the 11 motorcyclists killed, eight pedestrians and six drivers or passengers in motor vehicles have died in traffic crashes in 2026. No bicyclists have been killed in traffic crashes this year.
The MAX Green Line will be shortened to run only between Clackamas Town Center and Gateway Transit Center. Several bus lines will be combined, serve new routes or run less frequently. Get more information

Grants and funding
The Portland Housing Bureau (PHB) announced the availability of $10 million in grant funding for energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades in new regulated affordable multifamily housing, derived from the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund (PCEF). Affordable housing developers may now apply for PCEF grants to cover the capital costs of upgrading their projects to ensure that they are built and operated so as to reduce carbon emissions, reduce operating costs, and improve the resilience and health of their low-income tenants. Eligible organizations can apply now for two years of unrestricted operating support as part of the Operating Support Grants program. Grant awards will range from $25,000 to $145,000 annually, with award amounts determined by factors outlined in the grant guidelines.
To be eligible, arts organizations must have a minimum budget of $150,000, three years of history providing arts experiences in Portland—including services for K-12 students and people in underserved communities—and meet other eligibility requirements described in the grant guidelines.

It started with 136 teams. Today and tomorrow, the last teams standing take the field.
This week, fastpitch softball teams from across the United States and Canada came to Portland for the Triple Crown Fastpitch World Series.
Portland Parks & Recreation’s Sports Office brought the tournament to the city, with Delta Park serving as its headquarters and games played at parks across Portland.
After a week of competition, the tournament ends Saturday with championship play. Good luck to the athletes still chasing the title, and thank you to every team that made Portland part of its journey.
