Get Free Trees with Urban Forestry

Urban Forestry (UF) is excited to announce the start of the Free Trees for Portland season. This year, UF and partners will distribute and plant 8,480 trees, helping to grow a greener, healthier city.

While all Portland residents are eligible to receive a free tree, Urban Forestry is prioritizing outreach and plantings in neighborhoods with fewer trees—and hotter streets.  

If you live in one of the following neighborhoods, we will plant and care for your trees in your front yard or right-of-way for the next three years—free of charge. Sign up here.

Argay, Centennial, Cully, East Columbia, Glenfair, Hayden Island, Hazelwood, Lents, Mill Park, Montavilla, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Powellhurst-Gilbert, Russell, Sumner, Sunderland, Wilkes 

Participants will have a city arborist visit to pick the perfect planting spot(s). We can plant the tree(s) in the right-of-way with no curb or sidewalk, planting strips, or front yards. These trees can be used to fulfill replanting permit requirements.

There is no limit on the number of trees an address can receive, but we do take care to plant where there is enough space for them to thrive. Trees will be planted between November 2026 and March 2027.  

A variety of tree species are available, each with its own unique characteristics. We can help you determine the best species for your planting location, considering sun and water requirements, growing space, and overhead wires.

Celebrate Pride Month with Drag Me Outside

June is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities to American culture and society. You can celebrate Pride by joining an educational hike led by drag artists! Drag Me Outside is a new hiking group founded by Evergreen Hosp and Fiona Skye to educate the community about the environment and create inclusive spaces in the outdoors.  You can join their upcoming hike on Saturday, June 27, at Kindness Farms or their appearance at the World Forestry Center's Forest Pub event on July 13.

Stewardship Workday at Morning Star Baptist Church

Morning Star Baptist Church (4927 NE 55th Ave, Portland, OR 97218)

Join Depave and Urban Forestry for a morning of tree stewardship at Morning Star Baptist Church. Morning Star, in collaboration with Depave and Friends of Trees, planted 33 trees in the new green space behind the church along with garden plots and raised beds. Volunteers will get the opportunity to support this neighborhood greening project by watering, weeding, mulching, and pruning the trees.

Introducing the Forest & Washington Park Express Shuttle 

Portland Parks & Recreation is excited to launch the Forest & Washington Park Express Shuttle in mid-June to improve access between Forest Park and Washington Park and North, Northeast, and East Portland communities. This project is a public transit service funded by an Oregon Department of Transportation grant and aims to make it easier for Portlanders to visit these iconic parks. 

Harvest Fruit with Portland Fruit Tree Project

Like fresh fruit? The Portland Fruit Tree Project (PFTP) invites you to join in the 2026 Harvest! Portland has thousands of fruit trees, vines, and shrubs in public and private spaces. PFTP helps get fruit from the trees into the hands of people who need it most by coordinating staff-led, volunteer-supported harvests. The Grade-A fruit goes to community organizations and food pantries, and the Grade-B fruit goes home with volunteers (or it's processed into preserves and then donated).
