 STEADY AS SHE GOES. Harbor Pilot Colin McGladrey has been named Firefighter of the Year, capping 22 years of service in Portland Fire & Rescue. Based in Station 21, at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge, McGladrey pilots the fireboat when rescuers respond to calls on the water. “Through his leadership, devotion to his crew, and tireless service to the community, he has elevated everyone around him,” says the award. The Portland Bureau of Transportation is calling on Portlanders to celebrate the 10th birthday of BIKETOWN, the city's beloved system of shared e-bikes, by coming together to make a Guiness World Records attempt. PBOT is organizing an e-bike ride that will gather hundreds of Portlanders with the aim of earning the record for the Largest Electric Bicycle Party and Ride. The current record was set in Seattle in 2018.
Facing a record shortfall, Portland City Council successfully balanced the books for the upcoming fiscal year, adopting a budget of $8.5 billion that maintains critical services while making painful cuts. The budget keeps open all Portland’s 31 fire stations, 157 parks, 11 community centers, and 11 swimming pools. It keeps all Portland police officers and investigators on the job. It also makes sharp reductions to many programs, including shelters, parks, and police support staff. About 100 City employees will be laid off.
We got fresh guidance from the Oregon Health Authority. Swim rules at City pools will remain the same as last summer. Swimmers ages 10 through 13 will not be required to have an accompanying adult. However, we still recommend that children under age 14 be accompanied by an adult.
Put your safety first when buying or selling items through online marketplaces. Last week an electric bicycle being sold through Facebook Marketplace was stolen at gunpoint during the transaction. Police arrested both suspects. This case highlights a growing concern: Police have investigated at least 10 similar incidents so far this year.

Beginning Monday, June 22, Fitness in the Park opens at ten parks across Portland. Free group fitness classes led by Portland Parks & Recreation instructors. Classes take place Monday through Friday and are open to all fitness levels. The final day of classes is Friday, August 28.

The Safe Blocks Program, within the City’s Office of Violence Prevention, is accepting bids for placemaking projects in the Eliot neighborhood. The projects are in partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Arc-en-Ciel Montessori. A total of $50,000 is available. Closes June 29
