Summer Care for Newly Planted Trees
 With the official start of summer just around the corner, it’s time to give a little extra attention to the trees in your yard. Check out Urban Forestry's tips for taking care of newly planted trees so they can thrive during the hot months ahead.

Event Highlight: Vanport Trees Dedication
 Urban Forestry recently joined the Oregon Heritage Tree & Historical Marker Program to honor the Vanport Cottonwoods as the newest inductees into the Oregon Heritage Tree Program.
Held on the 78th anniversary of the Vanport Flood, the ceremony brought together Vanport survivors, descendants, and Indigenous community leaders to share stories honoring the legacy of Vanport.
Researchers used historic aerial photos to identify cottonwoods that likely survived the Vanport Flood. Now around 90-years-old, these historic trees can be visited from the parking lot at 1810 N Broadacre Rd, near the entrance to Portland International Raceway.

Tabling at the East Portland Sunday Parkways Event
Summer is the time for community gatherings and happenings! It’s also the busiest season for our outreach efforts, and we can’t do it alone. We are looking for volunteers to join us to table at upcoming events. This is a great way to connect with fellow Portlanders about trees and the environment, share information about Urban Forestry’s programs, and help grow support for our mission. No prior experience needed — just a welcoming attitude and a willingness to engage with your community.

Making Space for Trees and Dense Housing
Portland has a need for more housing and more trees. Historically, protecting and growing the urban forest have been seen as in conflict with creating more dense housing in Portland. The folks at Trees for Life Oregon don't think it has to be this way. Their recent video shows that trees and housing can coexist when developers use creative designs to keep and make space for trees.
Join the New to Portland Bike Ride with PBOT
Are you new to town, or new to cycling in Portland? Want to explore some of the best low-stress bike routes in North Portland? Then join the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s New to Portland ride on Thursday, July 9!
You'll see parks, current and future bikeways, and find other gems in the area. This is part of a series of New to Portland rides for 2026 exploring different areas and designed for folks who want to get to know their neighborhoods and neighbors.
Take a Tree Bike Ride with 350PDX
Join 350PDX at their 5th annual ride focused on bringing joy, curiosity, and thoughtful attention to recent efforts to address canopy inequity in Portland. The ride will take place on July 16, starting at 6pm. It will start at Lents Park and end at Laurelhurst Park. The ride will celebrate all the young trees that have been planted by Urban Forestry and community partners, as part of the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) Equitable Tree Canopy program, in historically under-invested areas.
