For more than a century, women have played a role in shaping the Portland Police Bureau, from pioneers like Lola Baldwin, to leaders like Chief Penny Harrington, to those continuing the work today. This video brings together the voices of women across the bureau sharing why they chose this path, what the work looks like, and what it means to serve their community.
Their experiences reflect both progress and ongoing growth while highlighting something simple: representation matters. Hear directly from the people doing the work, in their own words. If you are looking for a career centered on service, impact, and community, there is a place for you at the Portland Police Bureau! Learn more about careers with the Portland Police Bureau.

May 1st was National Heatstroke Prevention Day, a reminder that even a brief moment of distraction can have tragic consequences. Every year, children across the country lose their lives after being left in hot vehicles. It’s heartbreaking—and preventable.
You may think, “I’d never forget my child in the car.” But real life is hectic. Routines change, sleep is short, and stress can cloud judgment. It’s happened to parents, grandparents, and caregivers of all backgrounds. The risk is real—and the solution is simple. That’s why the Portland Police Bureau joins safety advocates across the nation in urging you to adopt this life-saving habit.
A report by the Center for American Progress shows Portland has made strides in reducing gun violence and has emerged as a national leader—ranking among the top 15 cities in the nation with the greatest reductions. This progress is the result of historic investments in community intervention, and strong partnerships between Ceasefire, the Office of Violence Prevention, the Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County, and community organizations—grounded in strategies proven to reduce violence. 2025 saw the largest single-year drop in the national homicide rate with Portland helping lead that trend. In 2026, homicides are currently down 56% year to date, and down 68% compared to the three-year average.
