Portland City Council approved a one-time allocation of Arts Tax funds to provide additional support for local arts organizations this fiscal year. Through a technical budget adjustment approved on April 15, the City directed $1.6 million from the Arts Access Fund to the Office of Arts & Culture to support organizations already participating in the City’s General Operating Support program.
The additional funding will provide $1,570,000 in grant awards to 79 Portland arts organizations, with most organizations receiving $20,000 each. These funds are intended to help provide near-term stability for organizations experiencing financial losses, while continuing to support the artists, workers, programs, and community spaces that contribute to Portland’s cultural life.

The Office of Arts & Culture has launched a new webpage sharing updates on the City’s work to strengthen the Arts Access Fund. The page includes context on the 2026 audit, progress on recommendations, and information about steps already underway to improve oversight, coordination, and public accountability.
The City of Portland seeks design concepts for the Veterans Memorials at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum (VMC) on the Rose Quarter Campus. Proposals should reflect the recommendations from the Veterans Advisory Group that convened in 2024 and align with current community priorities.
The previous panels honoring Portland-area veterans who gave their lives in service to our country were placed in storage in 2021 after they had fallen into disrepair. With recent renovations to the VMC, momentum has been growing to determine a future for the panels in a reimagined setting.
Submissions are due May 7 by 4 p.m. Shortlisted proposer(s) will be provided with small stipends to further refine their design concepts, and the evaluation committee will ultimately select the winning proposal.

Recognizing children as artists, musicians, and performers now — not tomorrow or later — is vital to building an arts ecosystem where young people can flourish creatively.
With community support for the Arts Tax, passed by Portland voters in 2012, the City committed to listening to children’s voices, hearing their stories, and validating their artistic expression.
Students from Franklin Film School recently visited Atkinson Elementary’s music classroom to learn why music matters to younger students. In the video, one student shares: “If we didn’t have music... we wouldn’t learn that you can find your part with everyone in the music community.”
