Calling for Heritage Tree Nominations
 We're accepting nominations for the Heritage Tree Program. Help us to celebrate and protect the remarkable trees that define our community's character, history, and natural beauty.
Nominate a tree that is:
- Exceptionally old or large
- Historically or culturally significant
- A beloved community landmark
- Rare or ecologically notable
Nominations are due May 1.

Heritage Tree Volunteers Needed
 We're looking for passionate community members to join our Heritage Tree Program as volunteers! Whether you love the outdoors, care about local history, or simply want to make a difference in your neighborhood, there's a role for you.
Volunteers help with:
- Evaluating and documenting nominated trees
- Conducting field assessments and site visits
- Supporting community outreach and education
- Assisting with program events and stewardship activities
No prior arborist experience is required, just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a love for the trees that make our community special. Training will be provided. Applications are due by April 30.

Event Highlight: Tree Planting at Harrison Park
 On Saturday, April 4, over 60 community members gathered at Harrison Park to celebrate the arrival of spring. Urban Forestry partnered with APANO and Friends of Harrison Park to host this planting and stewardship event to help regreen the park and connect with community members.

Elm Tree Pruning Moratorium Begins April 15
Dutch elm disease, or DED, is one of the most destructive plant pathogens in the United States and Europe. It has killed millions of elm trees despite efforts to control it. With approximately 3,500 susceptible elms throughout Portland, Urban Forestry works diligently to manage the impact of DED. To help protect Portland's elm trees, pruning any species of elm between April 15 to October 15 is prohibited.

 Earth Day Tree Talk: Black Heroes of Tree Activism
Wednesday, April 15, 5:30 to 7:30pm Midland Library (805 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97233)
To celebrate Earth Day, Urban Forestry is hosting a tree talk and social hour to educate the community about the unsung Black heroes of tree activism from around the world like Hattie Carthan, Wangari Maathai, and Portland's very own Estella Ehelebe. Join us at the Midland Library for a chance to learn and mingle with other tree enthusiasts.
Earth Day Tree Walk with Vision Zero
Friday, April 17, 6 to 8pm Alberta Park (1905 NE Killingsworth St, Portland, OR 97211)
Urban Forestry and the Bureau of Transportation's Vision Zero team are co-hosting a tree walk for Earth Day. We will walk around Alberta Park discussing what makes streets safe, environmental justice with trees, and how those themes connect.
Trees for Residential Streets Open House

Want free trees along the right-of-way without a curb near your home, but don’t know where to start? Come to Urban Forestry’s first open house for the Trees for Residential Streets (TRS) program. You will get an overview of our tree planting strategy and learn more about eligibility from the TRS Program Manager.

Celebrate Earth Day with the City of Portland at Parkrose Middle School on April 11. At the event, you can explore cleaner, more proactive ways to move through and live in Portland — from biking and using TriMet, to clean energy and the food we eat.
Apply to Neighborhood Tree Stewards
Neighborhood Tree Stewards applications are now open for this summer’s program. Sign up to be a part of this opportunity to learn more about your city, give back to your community, and connect with your neighbors. This year’s program will consist of six Saturday sessions from mid-May to the end of July. Space is limited. Apply today!
