Hi everyone,
I wanted to highlight three great ways to engage with building a more connected, more democratic Portland this week.
- Councilor Sameer Kanal is bringing forward his “Right to Know Who’s Policing You” ordinance for its first hearing before the Community and Public Safety Committee tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, beginning at 3 p.m.
This proposal is rooted in a simple but essential principle: accountability and transparency build trust. If adopted, it would prohibit law enforcement from concealing their identity with facial coverings while engaging with the public, require clearly visible identification (including name, agency, and badge number), and support our local officers in verifying and documenting the identity of individuals attempting to detain Portlanders. The Oregon Legislature recently passed the Law Enforcement Accountability and Visibility Act, and this ordinance is an important step in aligning Portland with that progress while joining other cities and states working toward stronger standards.
Our community deserves clarity, accountability, and confidence in the systems meant to keep us safe. I encourage you to stay engaged—there are opportunities to testify in person, virtually, or in writing, and to follow the discussion as it happens. If passed by the committee tomorrow it will be sent to full Council, where it can be passed after two hearings.
- A Min Yasui Pre-Gavel Reception will be held Wednesday, March 18, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the north atrium at City Hall. Refreshments will be served and speakers will discuss the contributions and legacy of Japanese American lawyer and activist Minoru Yasui, who stood against WWII-era incarceration camps. Come join us!
- Our Community Conversation Event with me and Metro Councilor Duncan Hwang will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19 at APANO’s Community Room, 8188 SE Division Street. Refreshments will be available and all are invited. Please RSVP to let us know you’re coming!
Thank you for all you do to create, engage with, and strengthen our community!
In gratitude,
Teacher Tiffany she/her councilor.koyamalane@portlandoregon.gov
