 Dear Neighbors,
Welcome to this week's newsletter. I remain focused on strengthening accountability, protecting vulnerable communities, investing in prevention over reaction, and creating spaces where Portlanders can be heard. Whether through policy, partnership, or public dialogue, my commitment is clear: we must build a city where opportunity and safety are not privileges, they are guarantees.
Thank you for staying engaged and walking this work with me.
With appreciation,
– Councilor Loretta Smith Portland City Council – District 1
Councilor Smith on KOIN 6: Housing and Homelessness
I joined KOIN 6 Eye on Northwest Politics with Ken Boddie to discuss my plan for using millions in unspent housing funds to prevent homelessness in Portland. Every month, nearly a thousand people are becoming homeless, and I believe we must act with urgency. I want to direct these funds toward helping families and individuals avoid eviction so they can remain safely in their homes.

As Chair of the Labor and Workforce Development Committee, I heard public testimony from members of the Oregon Drivers Union on a proposal focused on fare transparency and Transportation Network Company take rates. Their testimony provided important insight into the real experiences of drivers navigating the rideshare industry.

Last week I was honored to participate in Voices of Leadership: A Conversation with Metro’s Black Councilors, alongside special guest and former Metro Councilor Ed Washington. The conversation highlighted leadership, legacy, and the continued importance of representation in shaping our region’s future.

This weekend I attended Senator Wyden’s Town Hall, where community members shared the concerns and issues most impacting their lives. The event was followed by a Community Action Fair, offering attendees meaningful ways to support organizations working every day to protect and uplift our neighbors.
Celebrating Black History Month with Williams & Russell CDC
Thank you to Williams & Russell CDC for inviting me to be part of your Black History Month program. I am proud of the meaningful strides you are making to develop affordable rental housing and expand homeownership opportunities for communities of color. This work strengthens families, builds generational wealth, and moves us closer to a more equitable Portland.
