As some of you may know, February 12th is Abe Lincoln’s birthday. So, on Lincoln’s birthday, I want to highlight one of my favorite quotes of his—about the role of government:
"The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves—in their separate, and individual capacities.
In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere.
The desirable things which the individuals of a people can not do, or can not well do, for themselves, fall into two classes: those which have relation to wrongs, and those which have not. Each of these branch off into an infinite variety of subdivisions.
The first—that in relation to wrongs—embraces all crimes, misdemeanors, and non-performance of contracts. The other embraces all which, in its nature, and without wrong, requires combined action, as public roads and highways, public schools, charities, pauperism, orphanage, estates of the deceased, and the machinery of government itself.
From this it appears that if all men were just, there still would be some, though not so much, need of government."

If you’re one for romance, consider showing love to the City we call home this Valentine’s Day weekend. The Portland Winter Lights Festival will be wrapping up, but there’s plenty more to get into over the coming days. Here are a few things we’re looking forward to this weekend and beyond…
Portland Night Market The ever popular Portland Night Market returns this weekend! The recurring event brings over 175 vendors to the Central Eastside to celebrate our local food, culture, music, drink, and retail. 4 – 11pm, February 13 & 14 at 100 SE Alder St.
2nd Saturday Foster Road Cleanup Join residents of Foster-Powell and Mt. Scott-Arleta as they meet in Laurelwood Park for a monthly cleanup. This supports nearby Foster businesses, area residents, and one of Portland’s more unique public parks. You can register via the SOLVE website. All cleaning materials are provided. 10am – 12pm, February 14 at SE 64th & Foster Rd.
Montavilla Farmers Market Most farmers markets close shop during Portland’s colder months, but not in Montavilla. This year-round market moves to an every-other-week schedule between January and April. If you’re looking for farm-fresh veggies, home-made breads, prepared foods, other goods, and a good dose of community, this market is for you. 10am – 2pm, February 15 at SE 76th & Stark St.
Transportation Funding Open House As you’ve probably heard, our transportation bureau (PBOT) has a significant maintenance backlog. Inflation and waning revenue streams are the main culprits. With a growing list of streets and other transportation assets in need of repair, as well as larger projects waiting to be funded, the need to create more funding opportunities for PBOT has never been greater. PBOT is exploring several alternative funding options to increase revenue, and they’ll be sharing those options at several upcoming open houses. This is an opportunity for the public to learn more and share their feedback. In District 3, PBOT will host an open house on February 25, from 6:30pm – 8:30pm, at Atkinson Elementary School Cafeteria (5800 SE Division St.)
