Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the City honors the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust and remembers the millions of others targeted and killed by the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. This day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a reminder to confront antisemitism and racism and educate future generations to help prevent genocide. To learn more, visit the Oregon Holocaust Memorial in Washington Park near the International Rose Test Garden. Dedicated in 2004, the free outdoor memorial shares Holocaust history, survivor quotes, and the names of people who died in the concentration camps and their surviving relatives in Oregon and southwest Washington. It's sunny and cold outside, the kind of December day Portlanders love. The Sellwood Community House (SCH) is active, but quiet compared to busy summer months. Inside, adults gather around tables for Creative Club, teenagers stare out windows instead of at the computers in front of them, and preschoolers laugh while playing a game with their teacher.
To a visitor, seeing people from three or more generations in one place might suggest a special occasion. For Ashley Murray and Elizabeth Milner, it was just a regular Wednesday.
"It's really a multigenerational building," Ashley said, "There's something for everyone to do here, from little children up to seniors."
In the six years Ashley has been SCH's executive director, she has steered the organization through new beginnings, good times, and some hard times, too.
In 2019, when Portland Parks & Recreation faced significant budget cuts and a long-standing maintenance backlog, the bureau made the hard choice to end programming at Sellwood Community Center. It was difficult for everyone, including the staff who had dedicated themselves to providing recreation and education opportunities to the center's neighbors. But the story didn't end there.

Downtown Portland’s pedestrian activity has entered a sustained recovery phase. While total foot traffic has not yet returned to pre-pandemic 2019 levels, the data shows consistent year-over-year growth, particularly on weekends and among visitors. Some 32 million pedestrians visited downtown Portland in 2025, up from 30 million in 2024—a 5.5% increase. Saturdays reached 88.6% of 2019 volumes in 2025. Major cultural events, festivals, and holiday periods are now reliably producing near-normal or above-normal activity.
The City of Portland's Future of Large-Scale Performing Arts project team announced today that its market feasibility study, which examines the viability of a two Broadway-capable venue approach in downtown Portland, is complete.
Individuals and groups within the performing arts venue landscape are invited to express their interest through March 9, 2026. To better understand what operating models exist and what might be possible for Portland's City-owned performing arts venues, the City of Portland is launching an informal request for information.
