From November to mid-January each year, PBOT’s Leaf Day service helps us provide cleaner, safer streets, keep our storm drains clear, and ensure our intersections don’t flood. PBOT instituted Leaf Day because the number of leaves in our original 50+ Leaf Zones was simply too much for our regular street cleaning equipment.

Not sure what your leaf zone is? Type your address into the Leaf Zone Locator to see details of your service dates and district boundaries. Zone numbers that say "clean sweep" on the pop up details are areas where cars will be towed if left on the street during Leaf Day Pickup hours. Keep an eye out for no parking signs posted in these areas.
Make the most of your Leaf Day Service
-
One day before. Rake loose leaves you want picked up into the street one day before your scheduled Leaf Day pickup.
-
Gather loose tree leaves only. Pine and fir needles from evergreen street trees are okay. DO NOT place other yard debris in the street. NO twigs, NO branches, NO pinecones, NO grass clippings, NO other yard debris.
-
Keep one foot of space between your pile and the curb for storm runoff and to make it easier for our sweepers. Also allow plenty of clearance between your pile and any vehicle left parked on the street.
-
Trim your trees to leave 11 feet of clearance. Make sure you trim any low-hanging tree limbs over the street so our equipment can get as close to the curb as possible and get the best clean. Learn more about tree pruning and permits.
-
Move vehicles and other objects off the street. Whenever possible, allow plenty of clearance between your pile and anything left parked on the street. Leaf Zones are small enough that you should never have to travel more than a quarter mile to park a vehicle outside the boundaries of a zone.
-
Help your neighbors. People still work from home in large numbers, with vehicles parked longer. Check in with your neighbors so everyone remembers to move their vehicles on Leaf Day.
-
Don’t get towed. Moving your vehicle is REQUIRED in Zones NW 2, NW 3, NW 4, NW 6, NW 7, NW 8, NW 9, SW 1, SW 2, and NE 14. On Leaf Day, you are subject to a $85 citation for violating a temporary no parking zone as well as $294 in tow fees ($378 for larger vehicles) in these Leaf Zones. Storage and other fees may accrue. To locate towed vehicles, visit search.autoreturn.com or call Police Auto Records at 503-823-0044.
- Buy compost. PBOT crews haul leaves to our Sunderland Yard for composting. Learn how you can buy compost here.
Not in a Leaf Zone?
For the 2025-2026 Leaf Day season, PBOT added 29 zones. Historically, PBOT had to cut residential street sweeping citywide. However, investment from the city's 2025-26 budget gave PBOT the opportunity to rebuild the program. PBOT crews continue to sweep 1,000 miles of major arterial streets 6 to 8 times per year as well as protected bike lanes several times per year.
For emergency road hazards, clogged storm drains, or other hazards in the right-of-way such as downed signs, continue to contact PBOT's 24/7 Maintenance Dispatch at 503-823-1700. For helpful tips on year-round maintenance of your street please visit our street sweeping and cleaning page.
