Dear friend,

In the face of looming threats of a federal military occupation in our city, I’ve seen Portlanders come together to stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors. Our community is saying it loud and proud: troops are not welcome here.

I have so much hope for our city because people are taking action and looking out for one another. This is how we build a beloved community. So I’m writing to you today with some upcoming opportunities to take action for a brighter Portland.

Volunteer for the Portland Street Response Committee

Big things are happening in our public safety network here in our city: Portland Street Response has expanded its operating hours (6:00 am to midnight), added an additional phone number to reach them (503-823-7773), and is in the process of standing up a community oversight committee.

PSR’s new community oversight committee is currently accepting applications for volunteers. This is a great opportunity to get involved in real public safety initiatives that are proven to work. By volunteering for this role, you can help build an authentic and community driven public safety culture in Portland as we continue to reduce the use of armed response to mental and behavioral health crises.

The deadline to apply is Monday, October 27th. 

Submit your comments about the proposed CEI Hub

The Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub Policy Project will update Comprehensive Plan policies and rules to address issues related to bulk liquid fuel facilities in the CEI Hub. These changes aim to regulate bulk liquid fuel facilities.

The Hub, which spans a six-mile stretch of industrial land along the lower Willamette River, stores and transports over 350 million gallons of liquid fuels and other hazardous materials, including more than 90% of Oregon’s liquid fuel supply. These materials are held in large bulk tanks situated on unstable soils, in a high-risk seismic zone, a wildland-urban interface fire zone, and along a major rail corridor. A major incident at the CEI Hub could have devastating impacts on Portland’s ecological and social systems and lead to significant economic disruption across the state.

Four draft policy and zoning code alternatives for the CEI Hub Policy Project have been released for public comment. Each alternative builds upon the last and includes increasing levels of requirements and restrictions. Every alternative includes the existing bulk fossil fuel limitations.

President Trump’s newly emboldened ICE agents have been targeting immigrants in our community. A quick but powerful action you can take to keep our neighbors safe is to save the hotline number for the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition in your phone:

If you spot ICE in your community, call this number immediately. Make sure to keep your report clear: how many agents, where and when they are active, what actions they’re taking, what sort of vehicles they are driving, etc. Be as detailed as possible in your description but remember to only report information that is credible.

I’m so thankful to represent District 3 – a truly beautiful, kind and resilient district in our city. As we face heightened creep of fascism from our federal government, I’m heartened by the solidarity and strength that I’ve seen from our people. I will never stop fighting for you.
