Portland City Archives - AP56622
Forty years ago on Oct. 6, after a long and perilous journey, Portlandia arrived in her new home.
Sculpted in Maryland, she was hauled overland in bits and pieces and welded together at a shipyard in Northwest Portland. She was then barged up the Willamette River, got a tour of downtown on the back of a truck, and was hoisted by crane to her perch on the Portland Building.
Portlandia has seen a lot since then. Her face has been seasoned by sun and rain, but her expression remains as it always has.
Happy Birthday, Portlandia. Thank you for inspiring us with your outstretched hand. We’re glad you’re here. Reaching out to our city with confidence and strength. We are standing strong. We are rising.
