Several hundred residents held a peaceful demonstration on Sunday to protest President Donald Trump's order to deploy federal troops to Portland. Waving American flags, Portlanders gathered in Waterfront Park. "The future will judge us on how we show up at this moment," Mayor Keith Wilson told the rally, standing alongside Gov. Tina Kotek, Portland City Councilors, and other local leaders. "Show up with your neighbors. Bring your families. We need you now. Peaceful protest. We are Portlanders and we are Portland strong."

Dialogue Liaison Officer helps people make their voices heard
President Trump's order activating the Oregon National Guard to protect "war ravaged" Portland has put the spotlight on free speech. Portland has a longstanding tradition of political protests. While many have been peaceful, some have spiraled into tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement, as the City witnessed in 2020. Since then, the Portland Police Bureau has put a new emphasis on communication and building relationships with protestors. That's where dialogue liaison officers like Jessica Ruch come in.

Portland Street Response is announcing several changes – including a new number and new hours – to improve the program's ability to assist people experiencing mental health and behavioral health crises.
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) marked the significant milestone of swearing in 22 new police officers—the largest single group of hires in more than 25 years. The last comparable hiring event occurred on February 15, 1999.
A dozen Oregon mayors joined Mayor Keith Wilson for a press conference this week to urge President Donald Trump to reverse his order to deploy troops to Portland. One after another, the mayors, five of them veterans, stepped up to the podium to denounce the federal order as unnecessary, unwelcome, and unconstitutional.
The State of Oregon and the City of Portland filed a lawsuit to block President Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth from federalizing and deploying 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland.
"I cannot express the sadness and disappointment I feel when I hear the leader of our country call for the militarization of a situation that does not exist, with murky, unknown, and potentially deadly rules, and no clear definition of success or failure. There is no military strength without moral strength, no good outcome when summoning tempers alongside uncertainty and rifles, and no margin for error in what may come next."
Mayor Keith Wilson has directed the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to pause implementation of extended evening parking meter enforcement hours. This pause is necessary to be responsive to current conditions and support evening activities and businesses in central Portland during this critical time during the city's recovery from the pandemic.
