Portlanders can stay active and achieve their fitness goals while connecting to community and nature in our parks (like Mt. Scott, shown here). Back-to-school season is here, and streets all over Portland are about to get busier. With thousands of students walking, biking, rolling, and riding transit to school, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and the Portland Police Bureau urge everyone to travel with extra care. As part of a citywide safety initiative, police officers will have a visible presence in and around school zones during the first several weeks of the school year. Portland will open a new emergency overnight shelter in the Pearl District on Sept. 2. The NW Northrup Shelter will provide homeless folks with a safe, dignified place to sleep. “NW Northrup plays an important role in our goal to provide a lifesaving bed for every person, every night,” said Mayor Keith Wilson. “We're building a system where every door is a right door, restoring pathways to treatment, housing, and community livability for all of Portland.”
The city administrator oversees an $8.6 billion budget and 6,800 public servants who deliver day-to-day services across four major areas: public safety, public works, community and economic development, and city operations. As Portland’s executive leader, the city administrator also serves as a trusted advisor to the mayor. A new city administrator is expected to start work by the end of 2025.
In partnership with Portland Permitting & Development (PP&D), the Bureau of Technology Services’ Digital Services team is launching an interactive tool to help customers apply for permits. The new project guide asks customers simple questions about their project, then, based on their answers, provides a clear step-by-step guide for submitting the right forms to get the right permits.
Arts & Culture recently hosted a day of in-service instruction for Portland Public Schools (PPS) teachers to discuss and demo Portland’s first-ever arts education framework.

Rose City Self-Defense and the Safe Blocks Program hosted 19 attendees at a Personal Safety & Self Defense Workshop at Midland Library on August 19, 2025. Participants discussed specific safety concerns and shared concerns for violence against others and asked how best to intervene during difficult situations. The next workshop is planned at Midland Library on Wednesday September 17, 5:30-7:30pm.

The Echo Fund empowers creative musical excellence and professional development by supporting independent, working musicians with funding for creative, non-performance projects that support new growth and spur creative and career development.
The Office of Arts & Culture is excited to announce that Friends of IFCC’s Artist Grant & Residency Program is open for submissions through September 12, 2025. The IFCC Artist & Residency Program provides artists with dedicated funding, studio space, and yearlong opportunities for collaboration and professional development. In fiscal year 2025-26, Friends of IFCC will offer grants and residency opportunities to support projects and programming for artists working at any level and in various disciplines. This program is part of a larger community-driven effort to revitalize the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (IFCC).

A package of zoning code updates that aim to make it easier to understand and implement Portland’s zoning code has been released for public review and comment. The Regulatory Improvement Code Amendment Package 11 (RICAP 11) Proposed Draft contains the most recent in an ongoing series of updates and improvements to Portland’s land use regulations. The Proposed Draft is the staff proposal to the Planning Commission, and includes updates based on feedback earlier this summer.

Serve on a board or committee
The Portland Committee for Community-Engaged Policing (PCCEP) is comprised of 13 community members who volunteer their time to advise the Mayor (as the Commissioner-in-charge of the Portland Police Bureau) and the Portland Police Bureau, to independently assess the City of Portland’s Settlement Agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and to develop policies and assess PPB community engagement efforts.
