Trees for Life Oregon
This morning I spent time in the beautiful Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood with Councilor Morillo and volunteers from Trees for Life Oregon. Kyna and Jim showed us around Brentwood park and shared with us the importance of shade equity. I was reminded of how important our urban canopy is, not just for the aesthetics of our city, but in playing a crucial role in preventing heat related deaths and creating a more livable city for all Portlanders. I look forward to finding ways to increase the shade equity throughout Portland. Trees also play an important role in Vision Zero— did you know that cars drive slower on streets that are tree lined? Did you know that traffic deaths increase when there are heat waves? I’m excited to look into ways we can adjust code to make our communities shadier, healthier and safer for all.
Thank you so much, Jim and Kyna for the work you do for the community and for taking the time to meet with me! What a beautiful way to start the weekend.
Constituent Coffee at Sunnyside Environmental School
Join us for our monthly constituent coffee on Saturday, July 19 (tomorrow!). It will be at the Sunnyside Environmental School Park from 9:00-10:00 am near the playground (so kiddos can play!) and not too far from the grassy area (so pups can have fun!). We will bring coffee for all. Come share your thoughts and questions about our district! RSVP here: Constituent Coffee 7/19 - Google Forms
Maxine Dexter Town Hall
On Saturday, July 19, Representative Maxine Dexter will be holding a town hall at Franklin High School at 11am. This will be a great opportunity to address federal concerns! Get more information here: Events | Representative Maxine Dexter
Street Painting
Last week I spent time painting the intersection of 40th and Salmon Street! It was an incredible way to spend time with community and show some love to our greenways. Thank you so much to Emily and Kurtis for organizing this!

Community Listening Session for Damon Lamarr Johnson
The Portland Committee on Community-Engaged Policing (PCCEP) will be holding a listening session regarding the in-custody death of Damon Lamarr Johnson. Below is information on the listening session:
When & Where
Purpose of the Session
The listening session will bring together community leaders involved in the origins of the DOJ–City of Portland Settlement to recall why constitutional policing reforms were deemed essential, followed by open testimony from community members. We aim to deepen understanding of what constitutional, Fourth Amendment–compliant policing truly means and collaboratively discuss what justice looks like when those standards are not met. PCCEP will facilitate a candid conversation about how the Settlement’s promise can translate to real-world accountability, transparency, and lasting reform.
Why Your Presence Matters
- PCCEP was created under the 2012 DOJ Settlement to ensure constitutional policing safeguards. Cases like the tragic loss of Damon Lamarr Johnson signal that the City and PPB may not be where we need to be.
- City Council’s understanding of community perspectives on this issue is vital to ensure that Councilors are empowered to work effectively with the Mayor’s Office and District Attorney as we together define what accountability and justice looks like.

Thank you for reading!
Until next time,
