Hello friends,
As we move deeper into summer, I’m reminded of the power of showing up, in our neighborhoods, in our parks, in rooms where decisions are made, and most importantly, for each other.
From early morning Chamber breakfasts to Free Lunch + Play afternoons in the park, I’ve been so proud to see District 1 alive with connection, creativity, and care. We’ve been uplifting small businesses, engaging with community partners, and welcoming a bright new cohort of interns who are already leaving their mark on City Hall.
This work is more than policy, it’s people. And each time we gather, listen, and lead together, we get one step closer to the Portland we all believe in.
Thank you for continuing to walk this path with me. Let’s keep the momentum going — one conversation, one connection, one neighborhood at a time.
With purpose and gratitude,
– Councilor Loretta Smith Portland City Council – District 1

Remembering Damon Lamarr Johnson- A life that mattered.
On June 27, we lost Damon Lamar Johnson, a Black Navy veteran and Portland community member. At the time of his passing, Damon was living in transitional housing and navigating personal challenges.
Last Friday, body camera footage was released showing his final moments during an encounter with Portland Police. While the full details are still unfolding, this loss has been deeply felt across our city.
As we reflect, let us hold space for Damon’s humanity, he was a son, a nephew, a veteran, and a neighbor. I remain committed to asking hard questions, centering compassion, and pursuing justice with care and accountability.
Showing Up, Listening Deeply, and Leading With You!
I’ve had the privilege of being in rooms filled with purpose, pride, and people ready to make change. These moments are the heartbeat of my role and they remind me why I do this work.
Good Morning, East Portland Chamber of COmmerce Breakfast
|
I had the pleasure of attending the East Portland Chamber of Commerce’s Good Morning East Portland event held at Morning Star Retirement Facility with guest speaker Mayor Keith Wilson.
It was an energizing space filled with local business owners, community leaders, and advocates who care deeply about the future of East Portland. We talked about what it means to truly invest in our neighborhoods and the importance of keeping economic development at the center of our city’s work.
Mayor Wilson said it best: “We’ve got to get back to the basics — economic vitality.”
I couldn’t agree more. As your District 1 Councilor I’m committed to uplifting small businesses, expanding access to resources, and making sure East Portland is seen, heard, and supported.
Showing up in rooms like this, where collaboration meets action.
Let’s keep doing the work, together.

Every Week, One Voice. One Story. Large Impact.
This summer, we’re thrilled to welcome an incredible group of interns to City Hall and today, I’m excited to spotlight one of our own: Imani Linzy.
Imani is a rising leader and Political Science major at Florida A&M University (FAMU), where she’s already laying the groundwork for a future in public service. Here in Portland, she’s jumped right into the work, bringing energy, purpose, and community-building wherever she goes.
Each week, Imani will host Lunch & Learns for her fellow interns, creating space for them to connect, collaborate, and hear from City staff across departments. Through these gatherings, our interns are not only learning about city government, but they’re also building their own networks and professional presence.
This cohort is also working on mock resolutions, preparing to host a Mock City Council where they’ll craft an agenda, present ideas, and experience the policymaking process from the inside out.
Imani’s leadership and initiative make her a shining example of what the next generation of public servants can look like, bold, collaborative, and ready to lead.
We’re so grateful to have Imani and our entire intern team with us this summer. The future looks bright!
