Last week, we reached a major milestone, the City of Portland officially passed its annual budget. It was no small feat. Every council office rolled up their sleeves and worked diligently to find balance, make tough decisions, and ensure that our shared priorities were reflected in this year's plan.
From essential services to long-term investments in community safety, housing, and economic vitality, this budget represents a collective effort to move Portland forward with both care and strategy.
I want to thank my colleagues for their collaboration, our staff for their commitment, and you, the community, for staying engaged and advocating for what matters most.
We have a lot to look forward to in the coming months, and I’m excited to keep working alongside you to build a city that works for all of us.
Let’s keep going with vision, with purpose, and with each other.
– Councilor Loretta Smith Portland City Council – District 1

Coalition of Communities of Color Summer Soirée 2025
 |
|
I had the pleasure of attending the Coalition of Communities of Color’s Summer Soirée, an evening dedicated to celebrating culture, community, and collective power. This annual gathering brings together changemakers, advocates, and leaders from across the region to uplift the vital work CCC does in advancing racial justice, strengthening culturally specific organizations, and driving systems change here in Portland.
The energy in the room was inspiring, a reminder that when communities of color are resourced, centered, and celebrated, everyone wins. I’m proud to stand alongside the Coalition of Communities of Color in their work to build a more just, inclusive, and equitable Portland.

Showing Up, Listening Deeply, and Leading With You!
I’ve had the privilege of being in rooms filled with purpose, pride, and people ready to make change. These moments are the heartbeat of my role and they remind me why I do this work.
Summer Block Party and Mural Celebration
 |
|
I had the pleasure of joining community members at the Summer Block Party and Mural Celebration.
It was a vibrant afternoon filled with live music, crafts, local food and great conversations.
A1 Hawk, Midway Business Association and Portland Music company hosted a joyful and creative event.
It's always great to connect with neighbors and celebrate the heart of our community.

Juneteenth Parade
|
I had the honor of joining our community at the 53rd Annual Juneteenth Oregon Festival at Lillis-Albina Park on Saturday, June 21st.
From walking in the Clara Peoples Freedom Trail Parade to connecting with neighbors, artists, and local leaders, the day was filled with joy, reflection, and powerful reminders of our shared history. Juneteenth is more than a celebration, it's a call to continue building a Portland rooted in justice, equity, and unity.

Future Leaders Visit City Hall
 |
|
One of the best parts of serving on Portland City Council is meeting the next generation of leaders. I had the joy of running into students from Beverly Cleary School during their visit to City Hall. Their curiosity, energy, and thoughtful questions remind me why it’s so important to create a city where young people can see themselves reflected in leadership! |

Every Week, One Voice. One Story. Large Impact.

COR Disposal & Recycling, a Black-owned, Portland-based waste management company that is leading with purpose, innovation, and community impact located in District 1. Founded in 1996 by Alando Simpson, COR stands as the only Black-owned B-Corp certified waste and recycling company in the nation, a testament to their commitment to balancing profit with purpose.
COR is more than a disposal company, they are pioneers in sustainability, environmental justice, and circular economy solutions. Their work includes waste collection, recycling operations, and innovative efforts to repurpose materials, keeping unnecessary waste out of landfills and helping Portland move toward a greener future.
COR is a fierce advocate for environmental equity, local job creation, and community empowerment, showing us what’s possible when sustainability and social responsibility go hand in hand.

Your Voice, Your Neighborhood, Your Councilor
I believe leadership starts with listening. That’s why I’m committed to meeting you where you are in your neighborhood, not just at City Hall.
Recently, I joined the Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood Association Meeting with residents.
We discussed issues that matter deeply to our communities:
- The Sidewalk Improvement and Pavement Program (SIPP) a major step toward safer, walkable neighborhoods.
- Ongoing concerns around public safety and how we can continue to support both our communities and our first responders.
- Housing and stability, and what solutions are needed to keep families secure in their homes.
These conversations are critical. They help me better advocate for District 1 priorities and ensure the decisions we make reflect your voices, your experiences, and your hopes for the future.
Are you located in one of these neighborhoods? from across East Portland, Argay Terrace, Centennial, Glenfair, Hazelwood, Lents, Mill Park, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Pleasant Valley, Powellhurst-Gilbert, Russell, Sumner, Sunderland, Wilkes, and Woodland Park? If so, you are in District 1!
If you see me at a neighborhood event, stop and say hello. I’m here to listen, collaborate, and work alongside you.

Vision-Driven. Community-Focused. Future-Ready.
Behind every great leader is a great team and I’m proud to introduce the Smith Team! Over the past few days, we stepped away from the day-to-day to ground ourselves in vision, strategy, and purpose.
Our team retreat was more than just meetings, it was a space to dream big, set clear goals, and map out the future of our work for District 1.
We’re committed to showing up with intention, transparency, and care for the communities we serve.
Together, we’re building the future of East Portland and we can’t wait to keep moving forward alongside you.
