Living in a Democratic Society

This week has been quieter than usual around City Hall as Council is on recess, and we all take advantage of a little extra time to recharge from an intense few months. As we head into this 4th of July long weekend, I have been thinking a lot about the state of our country. I was recently digging into a pro-democracy training from an organization called the Metropolitan Group, and one part in particular really resonated with me:

In America, our freedoms matter. This country was built on the right to have our voices heard, to make our own decisions, to be treated fairly by the justice system, and to vote in free and fair elections. These freedoms are at the heart of democracy and our security. But, they require checks and balances on power and government that is open, honest, and responsive to the people. Our country hasn’t fully lived up to these freedoms. But, a strong democracy isn’t afraid to admit that and do the hard work of being better tomorrow than it is today.

However you are spending this weekend, I invite you to join me in taking a little time to reflect on what it means to you to live in a democratic society.

Constituent Coffee

Join us for our monthly constituent coffee on Saturday, July 19. It will be the THIRD Saturday of the month this time. It will be at the Sunnyside Environmental School Park from 9:30-10:30 am near the playground (so kiddos can play!) and not too far from the grassy area (so pups can have fun!). We will bring coffee for all. Come share your thoughts and questions about our district!

How can Oregonians access legal support if detained by ICE: Contact Equity Corps of Oregon (ECO) for free immigration legal services. Call 1-888-274-7292 (Mon-Fri, 9 AM-6 PM). Consider pre-enrollment for faster, easier access especially if detained.

Volunteer with immigration rapid response efforts: please sign up with PIRC (volunteers help with the hotline and by verifying ICE activity) and IMrJ’s accompaniment program (helping people attend ICE appointments).
