The sun is out in Portland and summer is on its way! I have been taking advantage of the last few weeks of school being in session by joining as many Bike Buses as possible! This week I joined Da Vinci Middle School on their ride home from school. This morning, I joined Creston students on their Bike Bus to school. I LOVE starting my day with students and spending time outside! Reach out to my office if you would like me to join your Bike Bus— I’m pretty close to riding all of the ones in D3!
Coming Up
Dragon Boat Races
On Saturday June 7 the City Dragon Boat team will compete to kick off the Rose Festival festivities! We have been practicing and can’t wait to hit the water on race day!
More Budget
Join the budget conversation! Our next two City Council Meetings to vote on budget amendments will be held over two days (6/10 and 6/11). See the link below for more details!
On Tuesday, I presented to the Community & Public Safety Committee about the impacts of my Vision Zero resolution Vision Zero: Eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries | Portland.gov. In order for Vision Zero to be successful, it needs cross-bureau collaboration and work. It was kind of funny to be on the other side of the dais presenting as a guest! I am excited to collaborate with my colleagues to make this resolution a success. Further, I hope this serves as a reminder that community and public safety have a broad definition, which includes topics like the prevention of traffic violence.
Creston Elementary School Visit
On Friday morning, I spent time with a few classes at Creston— a 1st grade class, a 4th grade class and two classes of 5th graders! The fifth graders have been learning about the different levels of government. They also just did a unit on Japanese incarceration during WWII. I was able to share about my grandparents and my personal experience as a 4th generation Japanese-American (Yonsei). I showed them pictures and newspaper clippings of my grandparents before and after they were sent to the camps. Students asked me questions about my role as the first Asian American woman to serve on Portland City Council. It was a beautiful way to close out AANHPI Heritage Month. We also played a mean game of four-square!
Joint Elected Town Hall
On Tuesday evening, I joined my fellow District 3 Councilors, as well as Representative Chotzen, and Senator Pham for a Joint Electeds Town Hall. It was wonderful to hear all of your questions! Thank you to everyone who came out! It was also great to hear more from our state electeds about what they have going on in the legislature.
