Portland Parks & Recreation has completed the long-awaited expansion of Southeast Portland's Parklane Park! Now the largest developed park east of I-205, its transformation includes a new playground, splash pad, skate park, sports fields, a community garden, new trees—and, yes, public art.
Naomi Likayi is a first-generation Congolese American artist based in Portland. Her mural at the park's pavilion and picnic shelter columns, inspired by the Bakongo Dikenga Cosmogram, is called Shared Differences. Cross-disciplinary artist Jennifer Dixon's Stone Seed Nest celebrates the natural world and quintessential characteristics of the Pacific Northwest. Both artworks are part of Portland's public art collection and commissioned through the City's Percent for Art program—managed by the Regional Arts & Culture Council via a contract with Arts & Culture.
Celebrate the reopening of the park at a community celebration on Thursday, June 12 from 3-6 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Enjoy family-friendly activities in the new park after the final bell on the last day of school for Parklane Elementary and Oliver Middle School just next door.

The Portland Building to host PSU's Art + Social Practice MFA Program's Assembly 2025
Portland State University’s MFA program in Art + Social Practice is nationally recognized for merging creative expression with civic engagement. Artists in the program tackle real-world issues like housing justice, environmental equity, and public health through art, and our office is proud to be hosting its students as artists-in-residence at the Portland Building.
On Friday, June 6 at 5 p.m., we invite you to join us for PSU’s Annual Assembly, a gathering organized by students, and graduation for two of the program's students: Midori Yamanaka, a Japanese social practice artist whose works explore culture, identity, and storytelling, and Manfred Parrales, a multidisciplinary Latin artist who explores themes like nostalgia, transition, and identity.
Also, now through mid-June, at the second-floor rotating gallery space, you'll find an interactive exhibit by Simeen Anjum, a Portland-based artist with roots in New Delhi. Her artwork initiates conversations about belonging, becoming, and possibilities in challenging times. We hope you'll come check out Simeen's work, as well as the dozens of pieces of public artworks on display at the Portland Building.
