It's Budget Season

Mayor Keith Wilson released his proposed budget this week for the City of Portland. As Councilors, we are given a week and a half from the release of the proposed budget to review it and offer amendments before adopting a final version for the City in June. Over the past few days, our office has been busy going line by line to make sure that we pass a budget that does right by ALL Portlanders, no matter their neighborhood.

You may have heard by now that our city is facing a significant budget shortfall. We are tens of millions of dollars short of where we want to be and that means potential layoffs and cuts to city services.  I’ll be honest with you – these feel like impossible decisions to make. But here’s my commitment to you: I’ll never stop fighting for working people, even when times are tough.

Thousands of you have emailed, shown up to listening sessions, provided public testimony or even pulled me aside at the coffee shop to let me know what is most important to you during this budget season. And I’ve heard you loud and clear: public safety means clean parks, unarmed crisis response, and homes for all. In this budget, here’s what I’m looking at:

• Portland Police Bureau’s hiring practices, staffing levels, and overtime usage
• Continue to decrease gun violence through upstream solutions, prevention and intervention
• Shifting low priority 911 calls to unarmed crisis responders so police can focus on high priority calls
• A wide range of housing solutions that go beyond temporary shelters
• Revenue options that include interest fees from companies that extract massive profits from our streets, labor and communities

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has provided feedback on the budget this season. When I first ran for City Councilor, my goal was to be an elected official who was responsive to my constituents – especially those who feel they have been left behind or ignored by their elected leaders. Your input matters deeply in this moment. Thank you.

In the District

One of my favorite things about being a City Councilor is getting out into the district and spending time with community members. Here are a few things I’ve been up to lately in District 3:

Town Halls: in April I joined my District 3 colleagues at two different town halls – one hosted by Portland Metro and one hosted by Southeast Uplift. Thanks everyone for coming out and asking great questions!

82^nd Avenue of Roses Parade: I had a blast walking with Councilors Koyama-Lane, Novick, Smith, and Avalos in this lovely and vibrant event!

Sunnyside Earth Day Celebration: I was so blown away by the creativity and expression that students (and their grown ups) brought to this day. Pure joy all around – I love District 3!

Federal Unionists Rally: Thank you to our courageous and powerful Federal Unionists for organizing this response to the President’s unjust and anti-democratic attacks on Federal workers. We rallied together to say that the public sector doesn’t belong to the billionaires. It belongs to us – to the people who built it, who staff it, who rely on it every day.

SUN school visit: Councilor Koyama-Lane and I met with parents, teachers, and volunteers at Grout Elementary to learn more about the impact of the SUN program in Portland Public Schools. We even got to spend some time outside, watch the students ride bikes around the playground, see some young artists hone their ceramics projects, and visit a ukelele class!

We’ll be meeting at Worker’s Tap (101 SE 12^th Ave) next Friday, May 16^th from 9:00 to 11:00 am and on Thursday, May 29^th from 5:00 to 6:30. Stay tuned for more events in June!
