Friends of IFCC awards grants to 23 Portland-based artists, including $100K from the Office of Arts & Culture 🎉
Local nonprofit Friends of IFCC recently announced a new round of awards for 23 Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (IFCC) artists. As part of the IFCC Artist & Residency Program, awardees will enliven and activate the historic cultural center—which includes a 99-seat theater, dance studio, gallery, and office—in North Portland.
Open to artists of any discipline, the program’s grantees create their works through a variety of mediums including dance, multimedia, multidisciplinary performance, music, spoken word, theater, and visual arts.
Friends of IFCC gets additional philanthropic support from the 1803 Fund and other partners.

In collaboration with our grantmaking partners at the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), Arts & Culture recently awarded $1.2 million in arts funding to 275 Portland-based artists and arts and culture organizations. Of these recipients, 185 awardees are individual artists and 90 are arts and culture organizations. From performing to visual arts, to film and literature, art forms from every medium are represented among selected grantees.
“The City of Portland’s Office of Arts & Culture is so proud to partner with RACC to provide funding for the new Portland Arts Projects Grants. Creating more space for more artists and arts organizations to explore, hone, and share their work across Portland, from downtown to the city’s farthest reaches, is one of the most important arts and culture investments the City can make,” said Arts & Culture Director Chariti Montez.

The City of Portland’s Arts Access Fund is powered by an annual income tax of $35—known as the Arts Tax. The fund ensures that every public elementary school student in Portland has access to an arts education, as well as supports grants for artists and arts organizations. The City of Portland, Arts & Culture, Portland schools, and their partners are hosting a number of events to celebrate the impact of the Arts Access Fund, including:
- 4/16-27: HeART of Portland with Portland Art Museum and Portland Public Schools
- Through 4/30: Student art installation at Goat Blocks in partnership with Central Eastside Industrial Council
- Through 4/30: Student art exhibit at the Portland Building
We hope you’ll join us!

Leading up to Tax Day, every Portlander should've received an Arts Tax mailer that what the tax is and how to pay it. In the spirit of arts education, we’re also inviting you to set aside a moment to get a little creative—this year’s mailer includes a coloring sheet. 🎨 Grab your crayons or markers, take a photo, and share your creation with us on Instagram at @pdxartsculture.

Coming to you live from KATU!
The Arts & Culture team will join KATU ARC PDX Anchor Wesleigh Ogle twice a month to chat about all things arts and culture, with an emphasis on upcoming events, local artists and creatives, and news from our office. We're thankful for the opportunity—every other Thursday at 7:45 a.m. on KATU—to share arts and culture highlights with our community.
On March 13, Director Chariti Montez and Arts Education Coordinator Dawn Isaacs joined the conversation to talk about the office’s management of the City’s public art collection and the Arts Access Fund. Last week, on March 27, Assistant Director Darion Jones joined to discuss Friends of IFCC’s recent grant announcement (mentioned at the top of this newsletter). On April 10, we’ll be chatting about Portland Panorama, kicking off later that same evening, as well as the Fertile Ground Festival.
All of these segments are available to watch on the Arts & Culture playlist on the City’s YouTube page.

Public art spotlight: Data Crystal: Portland
Photo courtesy of David Kressler / kresslerphoto.com
Designed specifically for the Portland Building, Data Crystal: Portland by Refik Anadol was installed in 2019. The large-scale sculpture uses millions of images of the city of Portland, transforming them into a 3D form through AI. Visible from the first and second floors, the piece uses art, technology, and Portland’s interconnected communities to represent the material connections that emerge from invisible interactions between fellow city dwellers.
Data Crystal: Portland is part of the City's 1,700-piece public art collection and is free for the public to see firsthand, along with many other works, at the Portland Building.
