I appreciated the thoughtful, substantive discussion we had on Wednesday and feel it highlighted the kind of good-faith political debate that helps build trust in local government. Community members have raised deep concerns about the Zenith franchise agreement for years, and we were able to respond with meaningful action this week. Let's not make the public wait so long again.
Support Councilor Morillo’s Algorithmic Rent Pricing Ban Ordinance!
We need your help to protect renters and stop corporate rent manipulation! On March 25th, the Algorithmic Rent Pricing Ban Ordinance will be heard in the Homelessness and Housing Committee, and we must ensure our City Council members vote YES.
What’s Happening? Landlords and property management firms are using algorithmic pricing software to coordinate rent increases, artificially inflating prices and worsening Portland’s housing crisis. These tools prioritize profits over people, displacing tenants, reducing affordable housing options, and deepening inequality.
Councilor Angelita Morillo testified March 19th in support of SB 722, which targets similar harmful pricing practices at the state level. Now, we must ensure her
Algorithmic Rent Pricing Ban Ordinance moves forward to protect Portland renters.
✅ What This Ordinance Does:
- Prohibits landlords and property managers from using algorithmic tools to price-fix rent costs.
- Establishes penalties for violations, ensuring enforcement mechanisms to protect tenants.
- Requires transparency in rent-setting practices and prevents manipulation of rental markets.
We need your support! Submit written testimony and contact City Council members to urge them to vote YES on this critical ordinance.

Alien Enemies Act
Last Friday, President Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act — a deeply concerning move. This 1798 law has only ever been used during wartime to intern, detain, and deport residents without due process. Its invocation now sets a dangerous precedent and threatens the fundamental rights and dignity of individuals in our communities.
I stood alongside advocates and leaders earlier this week to speak out against this decision. You can read more about the event here. We must remain vigilant in defending justice and ensuring that no one is stripped of their rights based on fear and xenophobia. Our strength as a nation comes from our diversity and our commitment to fairness and equity.
Let’s stand together against unjust policies and fight for a future where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
Spring Break and Schedule Modifications
The Governance Committee Meeting will be moved to March 31 to accommodate Spring Break. If you are planning on attending or submitting testimony this is the new time!
