Recognizing the contributions of local artists at the City's swearing-in ceremony
Many thanks to the Portland artists, musicians, and creatives who helped set the stage for a new era at City Hall through their involvement in the swearing-in ceremony for Mayor Keith Wilson, Auditor Simone Rede, and City Council members on December 19, 2024.
As part of the joyful, historic gathering, the Office of Arts & Culture team coordinated musical performances by LaRhonda Steele and the Roosevelt High School band, as well as a poetry reading from Portland's Creative Laureate Joaquin Lopez.
Additionally, Arts & Culture and the Regional Arts & Culture Council collaborated on the display of 2D works from the Visual Chronicle of Portland, part of the City's public art collection.

Portland's Percent for Art program bolsters programming at City Hall
Anis Mojgani (L) and Jen Shin (R)
The first convening of Portland’s new City Council on January 2, 2025 opened with readings from Portland-based poets Anis Mojgani and Jen Shin. Arts and culture programming at City Hall is made possible by the City’s Percent for Art program, which specifies that 2% of capital construction projects, including the renovation of Council Chambers in 2024, be dedicated to public art. The Office of Arts & Culture contracts with the Regional Arts & Culture Council to provide these and other public art services.
The tenth Poet Laureate of Oregon and two-time individual champion of the National Poetry Slam and winner of the International World Cup Poetry Slam, Anis Mojgani read his poem entitled "Forward" at the City Hall.
Jen Shin is a Korean American writer and mental health advocate with more than a decade in recovery from alcoholism and bulimia. She read her poem "Flow" at the first City Council meeting of 2025.
