TL;DR: General fund contingency budget approved for staff expansion and district offices; Action for Labor solidarity; Committees on the way
At our first evening Council meeting, we passed an emergency resolution to approve a proposal for a supplemental budget to expand our staff capacity and to establish our District offices. This is a critical step in the right direction to better serve our City and implement the new form of government voters approved.
Thank you to the community members, Government Transition Advisory Committee, and labor leaders for demonstrating your support and giving your recommendations for building offices that can effectively legislate and respond to community members citywide.
I introduced a resolution co-sponsored with Councilor Zimmerman that Council unanimously passed to withdraw authorization originally granted in December 2024 for the City Attorney to file an unfair labor practice complaint directed to AFSCME. At the dais I said the following while moving the resolution:
“My hope is that this council stands with AFSCME and seeks every opportunity to provide assurances to its rank and file members that we have their backs, and that includes respecting their right to organize for a better contract.”
Nearing the end of our five-hour meeting, we established eight policy committees. You can expect me to be engaged in committees I’m not formally assigned to, and I look forward to my leadership roles in Arts and Economy and Labor and Workforce Development. Climate justice, social housing, and transportation safety are still top priorities I’ll work with my colleagues to address. Read the full list of committees and their descriptions.
Here are my assignments:
- Arts and Economy Committee (Co-Chair)
- Labor and Workforce Development Committee (Vice Chair)
- Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (Member)
- Finance Committee (Member)
You don’t need to wait until the committees are set up to communicate with us about your policy interest areas. Reach my office by email at councilor.green@portlandoregon.gov or complete our District 4 constituent services form.
In Solidarity, Mitch Green
See you in Sellwood on January 31st
You’re invited to office hours outside of City Hall. We’ve enjoyed meeting our community members at City Hall and downtown every Friday, and it’s time to bring our office to the southeastern part of District 4. Sellwood Community House is hosting us on January 31st. Let us know you’re coming, and we look forward to seeing you. If you’ve got a location for future office hours, send your suggestions to Maria Sipin, Chief of Staff, maria.sipin2@portlandoregon.gov.
