 Oregon SLEEP Act of 2025
On December 10, Multnomah Youth Commission (MYC) Co-chair Aditi Subramaniam presented to the Oregon House Committee on Education to preview the Oregon SLEEP Act (currently designated LCO 653). This act is planned to be introduced during the 2025 legislative session to change high school start times in Oregon to no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued recommendations for high school start times of 8:30 a.m. or later, which has been shown to lead to improved physical and mental health for students, as well as other benefits.
"This is a wake up call from youth to the system," said Subramaniam. "It's time that we make sure that Oregon schools are built for Oregon students."
The MYC is the official youth policy body for the City of Portland and Multnomah County and has worked with legislators, youth, parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to shape these policy recommendations.
