On August 1, Multnomah Youth Commission (MYC) members Aditi Subramaniam and Alvin Chan, Oregon Rep. Hoa Nguyen, and Dr. Ben Hoffman sat down with KGW's Straight Talk to discuss ways to fight chronic absenteeism in Oregon schools.
As youth, commissioners Alvin and Aditi were able to speak to their experiences and those of their peers. Aditi recalled seeing her older sister struggle to get going in the morning and her difficulty concentrating in her earliest class.
Dr. Hoffman and Rep. Nguyen brought their experience to the table to talk about the impacts these changes could have for students and their communities.
The Multnomah Youth Commission's (MYC) Education/Youth Voice Committee's proposal to push highschool start times back to at least 8:30 am will allow students to get more sleep, eat breakfast, and get to school on time more alert to learn in their first period classes. These changes in other schools have been shown to increase students' academic and athletic performance, as well as their overall mental and physical health.
