Safe Ride Home 2018

A Message from Transportation Commissioner Chloe Eudaly:

Portland, take a Safe Ride Home this holiday season! I have directed Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to fully fund our Safe Ride Home program from December 18th to January 1st as part of a citywide effort to prevent intoxicated driving in Portland this holiday season.

Nearly half of all fatal crashes in Portland are due to impaired driving. The consequences of driving while intoxicated are tragic, and it is simply not worth it. With our community’s commitment to Vision Zero we have declared that no traffic deaths are acceptable—despite this commitment, Portland has already seen 48 traffic deaths on our streets this year. We need every Portlander to commit to zero traffic deaths as well, and we need every Portlander to make a safe plan for holiday festivities.

With Safe Ride Home, you can save up to $20 off a taxi (coupon here), and up to $10 off Lyft and Uber with promo code PDXSRH19. Learn more at saferidehomepdx.com, and please share this information with your friends and family!

Public transit is a terrific option to celebrate safely—TriMet buses and MAX trains, as well as Portland Streetcar, will be free on New Year’s Eve after 8 p.m. And please remember it is also illegal to bike or scoot while intoxicated.

Equity + Inclusion Team Note: Police enforcement will be increased in the Portland area until New Years Day - please, please, PLEASE help us keep the streets safe this holiday season and consider these discounted ride options and travel alternatives.

Being visible when driving, walking and biking is important any time of year and especially during Portland’s darker winter months.  The PBOT Vision Zero team is partnering with diverse community organizations to distribute retro-reflective stickers that will help Portlanders be more visible while walking and rolling after dark. So far, they have hosted 18 sticker parties and are planning to come to a location near you.

PBOT's Safe Routes to Schools team is also working to get retro-reflective hats to children in Title 1 schools.

Remember these safety tips are you travel this winter:

  • As drivers, turn on your headlights, continuously scan your environment looking for people walking and biking, and leave adequate space between you and the vehicle in front so you can more easily see what is happening in front and beside you.
  • When walking, cross at the corner where drivers are more likely to see you. Look before crossing and as you cross watching for turning drivers and others that may be entering your lane. Make yourself more visible by carrying a flashing light and wearing retro-reflective material on your clothing and gear.
  • When biking, be predictable. Watch for turning vehicles. Make yourself more visible by carrying a flashing light and wearing retro-reflective material on your clothing and gear.
