News Release:

Safer crossings, rapid-flashing beacon coming to NE Sandy Boulevard and 31st Avenue, thanks to Fixing Our Streets

This project was made possible by Fixing our Streets, a voter-approved 10-cent gas tax for restoring our streets and making them safer.

Intersection of 31st Avenue and Sandy Boulevard

(Sept. 23, 2019) A new Fixing Our Streets safety project starts construction today, with the installation of a rapid-flashing beacon, upgraded ADA-accessible curb ramps and other safety improvements at NE Sandy Boulevard and 31st Avenue. This Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) project will make crossing NE Sandy Boulevard—a high crash corridor—safer for pedestrians to get to TriMet’s frequent-service Line 12 bus stop and to other businesses in the area.

Sandy Boulevard is designated as a High Crash Corridor which means there are a high concentration of crashes along it. On Sandy Boulevard, from 2013 to 2017, there have been a total of 759 injury crashes, including: 2 fatalities, 27 serious injuries, and 204 moderate injuries. The intersection of NE Sandy Boulevard and 31st Avenue was first identified for improvement in the 2014 NE Sandy High Crash Corridor Safety Plan.

During construction, we ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all lane detours and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. Learn what you can expect in our work zones and how you can help everyone stay safe by watching this video: https://youtu.be/lx3RkJjkjSE

This project was made possible by Fixing our Streets, a voter-approved 10-cent gas tax for restoring our streets and making them safer. It is the first local funding source in the city’s history dedicated exclusively to transportation needs. Fixing our Streets projects span across Portland to the benefit of all Portlanders.

The NE Sandy Boulevard and 31st Avenue project is funded with $149,000 from Fixing Our Streets and additional funding from state “Quick Builds” funds. Quick Builds is a pool of funds from a 2017 House Bill dedicated to small capital projects.
