PARK(ing) Day - last call for entries

We are only two weeks away from PARK(ing) Day!

Have you been thinking about what kind of community gathering space you would like to create for a day? In 2018, we had some amazing ideas:

  • Art Studio – creating collaborative community art pieces
  • Letter Writing Station – re-connecting by mail
  • Bubble Park – reminding you how fun bubbles can be
  • Tea party, coffee and bike repair, gathering spaces, and so much more!

Get your creative juices flowing, gather your team (or go solo) and make your vision come to life on Friday, September 20th!

Getting a permit is easy, and FREE!

Fill out the PARK(ing) Day application and submit it to pbotparkingday@portlandoregon.gov

DEADLINE TO APPLY IS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13th

Questions? contact: pbotparkingday@portlandoregon.gov or 503.823.7788

Peace Memorial Park - update

Participate in the Redesign of Peace Memorial Park!

Peace Memorial Park (PMP) is a pocket park above the Eastbank Esplanade, at the corner of NE Lloyd and Oregon. Hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians pass through it every day, most without giving it a second thought. What if it were a real destination in itself?

Veterans For Peace (VFP) initially created the park to promote the message of world peace and honor victims of war, both military and civilian. Lloyd EcoDistrict is partnering with VFP, Xerces Society and landscape architects PLACE studios on a new design that will continue to promote peace, while also including native and native-adaptive plants that are lower maintenance, drought-tolerant, and attract pollinator species.

Lloyd EcoDistrict wants your feedback on the design choices!

Please attend one of their public open houses to make your voice heard:

Online at https://www.ecolloyd.org/peace-memorial-park-open-house/

In person:

September 17: At the park site 4pm – 6 pm

September 19: DoubleTree Hotel 4 pm – 6 pm (The Portland in the Streets team will be at this event to answer questions about our community use permitting programs.)

September 26: At the park site 7am – 9am

There will also be opportunities to provide feedback in the lobbies of various buildings throughout Lloyd! Check Lloyd Eco District’s calendar for updates.

They will incorporate public feedback into the final design, and present it in November. Stay tuned for updates by subscribing at https://www.ecolloyd.org/peace-memorial-park-open-house/

If you would like to contribute to the park, please go to https://www.ecolloyd.org/donate/ to donate.

August Sunday Parkways

Sunday Parkways - Northeast Route

Summer isn’t over!

Join us on September 22nd and enjoy the last Sunday Parkways event of 2019. The Northeast route will open eight-miles of streets and connect our communities with plenty of fun for everyone.

Portland in the Streets will be hosting a gratitude giving station. Stop by and create a note of thanks for a friend, neighbor, family member, etc. Check out some of the amazing work that PBOT has been doing over the summer and leave a message of gratitude for all of the hardworking teams who manage our streets and transportation systems.

As always, we will have fun and games set up for the Portland in the Streets pop-up block party. Stop by to play, read, relax, create, and so much more!

We can’t wait to see you out there!

Montgomery Image

Montgomery pedestrian plaza is reopening!

The month-long closure of Montgomery in May was so successful that Portland State University (PSU) location is closing the location again. Starting at the end of September SW Montgomery, between Broadway and 6th Ave, will become a car-free corridor and pop-up pedestrian plaza until the end of the calendar year.

The space includes several components that make it a great spot to stop and relax, including:

  • a student designed street painting
  • modular furniture designed by PSU's Center for Public Interest Design
  • colorful tree lighting
  • movable cafe seating
  • large planters at either end of the closure
  • hanging planters designed by a public spaces class with the College of Urban and Public Affairs
  • and so much more!

The Montgomery Pop-Up Plaza is one part of the Montgomery Green Street Plan that was developed by PSU in 2009. The plan focuses on Montgomery's role as a pedestrian route connecting the campus from the car-free park strip on the West side to the Urban Center Plaza transit hub on the East side.
