Announcing the winners of the
2019 Bike to Books Design Contest
Winning art will be installed on Portland streets
(Sept. 13, 2019) What do a jellyfish, unicorn, alien, shark, and sloth have in common? They are all winning designs from this year's Bike to Books Design Contest!
Hundreds of young artists have participated in the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and Multnomah County Library's Bike to Books Design Contest since it's inception in 2017 and their art has brought a smile to the face of thousands of cyclists across the city. The program invites Multnomah County students to design art for bike lanes for National Bike Month in May. The program was recently adopted by the City of Sydney, Australia.
The 2019 Bike to Books Design Contest, now in its third year, asked children to design their own original art for Portland bike lanes. Three winners were selected from each of the three age categories: Pre-K to 2nd grade, 3rd to 6th grade, and 7th to 12th grade. The grand prize winners will have their art installed on Portland bike lanes and in neighborhood greenways across Portland by PBOT’s street striping crews later this summer. Second place winners received a pack of four day passes to Lumberyard Indoor Bike Park that included admissions and gear rental, while third place winners received a helmet from Nutcase Helmets. Each of the winners received a certificate from PBOT and Multnomah County Library. The winning designs are displayed in their library branch.
In June, PBOT and Multnomah County Library staff reviewed entries and voted on the first, second, and third place winners as well as honorable mentions.
These are the winning designs:
The contest was open to students from Pre-K to 12th grade living in Multnomah County. Design pages could either be picked up at any of the Multnomah County Library branches (click here for locations) or downloaded online. Designs had to be submitted to a library branch in person in order to be entered into the contest.
To get a better look at the winning designs, as well as the honorable mentions, visit the Bike to Books and National Bike Month website.
Thanks to everyone who participated in Bike Month 2019! We can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2020.
