Traffic Advisory: Work paused on West Burnside in advance of the Portland Rose Festival, first Portland Timbers home game
Expect delays eastbound on W Burnside
between 18th and 19th Avenues through May 31
(May 29, 2019) -- The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will pause work on the West Burnside Multimodal Project at the intersection of West Burnside and 18th, 19th and Alder from May 31 to June 10 in advance of the Portland Rose Festival and Portland Timbers home opener.
With the pause on construction, the eastbound lane on West Burnside will reopen. The reopened lane will reduce conflicts with the Rose Festival parades (which use the area for disbanding) and the first Timbers home game at the revamped Providence Park on June 1. Concrete work on the new bus island will restart on June 10, when additional eastbound lane closures will be required. The pausing of construction is part of PBOT's efforts to coordinate construction-related traffic impacts and major events citywide. The West Burnside Multimodal Project is scheduled to be complete by the end of August.
The temporary eastbound lane closure on West Burnside will continue through May 31. While one eastbound lane will remain open, the traveling public can expect significant delays traveling east on Burnside, particularly during the morning commute. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all construction signage, and use alternate routes if possible. To help mitigate traffic impacts, PBOT crews have temporarily adjusted signal timing on West Burnside to better move traffic through the corridor.

The lane closure is necessary to ensure crews can work in a safe and efficient manner and to allow the concrete to cure to the appropriate strength. West Burnside's travel lanes are directly adjacent to the curb, so in addition to protecting workers while working, the lane closure ensures vehicles don't drive over and crack the new concrete gutter before it has sufficiently cured.
This work remains weather-dependent and the schedule may change.
These improvements are part of the West Burnside Multimodal Project, one of a series of safety improvements PBOT is making along the corridor. For more information or to sign up for e-updates, please visit the project webpage.
