(Nov. 9, 2018) -- The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is supporting multiple events and commemorations organized by the Urban League of Portland to honor Mulugeta Seraw (Moo-loo-GATE-uh Suh-RAU), a 28-year old Ethiopian college student living in Portland who was murdered by racist skinheads outside of his apartment November 13, 1988.
PBOT is supporting these commemorative events through its Portland in the Streets Community Grant Program which invests in small-scale community-driven projects focused on transportation safety, equity, innovation and placemaking. This year’s grantees included the Urban League of Portland; grant funds were used to support placemaking efforts at their building, as well as the Mulugeta Seraw commemorative events.
PBOT recognizes that personal safety, including hate speech and violence, impacts how diverse communities utilize and interact with the local transportation system. PBOT encourages community members and public employees to participate in these events to learn more about how they can stand in solidarity against hate and violence.
