What's new in Gateway?

Dear Community Members,

Exciting transportation improvements are on their way to Portland's Gateway neighborhood! As you can see from the above map, a number of new crossing improvements, Neighborhood Greenways and sidewalk projects are funded and are currently in the design stage. Some, like the Halsey-Weidler Streetscape Project, are currently under construction, and others will be kicking off in 2019.

To help you keep track, we've compiled the latest updates on all the great work happening in your neighborhood:

122nd open house

Get involved: 122nd Ave Plan: Safety, Access, and Transit

PBOT is developing of a plan to identify improvements on 122nd Ave, between SE Foster and NE Marine Dr. We will consider changes to the street cross-section, additional enhanced crossings, lighting, signal changes and more to meet the following goals: Increase safety for all, improve pedestrian & bicycle access and support better transit while balancing needs of freight & other modes. PBOT is actively seeking public input to help identify improvements to help eliminate serious injuries and fatalities and remove 122nd Ave from the Vision Zero High Crash Corridor network. Join our open house on 11/7/2018 from 5:30-7:30pm at Midland Library.

Recently completed: NE 102nd Avenue Sidewalk Infill Project

Earlier this summer PBOT completed construction on sidewalk infill on NE 102nd between Sandy and I-84. This project is one of 64 projects funded by the Fixing our Streets program. We expect this new infrastructure will help residents more safely access MHCC Maywood Park campus, Prescott elementary school, Parkrose high school, Gateway Green park, multiple transit routes, and businesses along NE Prescott. Take a stroll and let us know what you think!

102nd and Halsey

Corner work in progress at NE 102nd and Halsey for the Halsey/Weidler Street Improvement Project.

Under construction: Halsey/Weidler Street Improvement Project

Construction is currently underway on the Halsey/Weidler Street Improvement Project and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2019. This project includes pavement reconstruction on NE Halsey, traffic signal upgrades at 102nd and Halsey/Weidler and pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements along NE Halsey and NE Weidler Street between NE 102nd and 112th Avenue.

Coming soon: East Portland Active Transportation to Transit Project

This project is scheduled to begin construction in spring 2019. The project will improve pedestrian safety and access along SE Division Street between 102nd and 157th by infilling missing sidewalk, building ADA-compliant curb ramps and driveway connections and installing three new signalized crossings. This project will also install the 130’s Neighborhood Greenway, a new north-south bicycle and pedestrian route between the Springwater Corridor Trail and the I-84 Multi-Use Path. Keep an eye out for more info about this project in the coming months!

102nd Ave Crossings

Still in development: NE 102nd Pedestrian Crossing Planning Effort

In partnership with Prosper Portland, the Portland Bureau of Transportation is working to find better ways to link the Gateway Transit Center and the Halsey-Weidler Business District. City staff will work with the Gateway community to identify one or two locations to build safer pedestrian crossings on NE 102nd Avenue between NE Halsey St and NE Glisan St. The project team has identified preliminary locations and evaluated each location’s feasibility. They are reaching out to the community to understand which of the crossing locations would most help people safely get around. This planning work is funded by a $100,000 agreement with Prosper Portland that will also look for funding sources for the crossings (such as Local Improvement Districts, Transportation System Development Charges and redevelopment), reexamine the Gateway Master Street Plan, suggest improved connections through the Gateway Shopping Center, and provide technical assistance to community groups who have been awarded grants for Gateway Identity Projects to improve the sense of place in Gateway.

Still in development: East Glisan Street Update

PBOT is in the process of completing additional traffic modeling and considering street cross-sections for NE Glisan between 102nd and 162nd.  We have also reviewed, and are taking into account, comments from residents from our online survey and open houses that occurred summer 2018. PBOT expects to make decisions about the cross section of NE Glisan spring 2019. We are appreciative of the many residents who took time to provide input on this project and we are using this opportunity to do further analysis of the corridor.
