News Release:

PBOT brings back Safe Ride Home safety initiative for Cinco de Mayo weekend

Safe Ride Home

(May 3, 2018) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will offer discounted taxi, Lyft and Uber rides during Cinco de Mayo from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, as part of the bureau's Safe Ride Home program. The Safe Ride Home initiative makes it easy to celebrate responsibly by providing Portlanders with discounted travel options. This is the third Safe Ride Home offer from PBOT.

The Safe Ride Home program is offering people the following discounted travel options from May 4 to May 6:

  • Up to $20 savings on taxi rides with Radio Cab, Broadway Cab, Union Cab, New Rose City Cab, New Green Cab, PDX Yellow Cab and United Independent Cab. Coupons will be available for pickup during the Cinco de Mayo weekend from the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, the participating businesses below, and Portland Police Bureau officers in the Central City. Discount does not include gratuity.
  • A $5 savings on rides with Lyft and Uber. Riders can access the discount by entering a promo code into their apps. The promo code can be retrieved from the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, the participating businesses below, and the Portland Police Bureau officers in the Central City. Promo codes will be available beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4 through 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6. Code downloads for Lyft will be limited to 1000 users. Code downloads for Uber will be limited to 5000 users. Discount does not include gratuity.

The Safe Ride Home program is a partnership between PBOT, the Portland Police Bureau, Portland cab companies Radio Cab, Broadway Cab, New Rose City Cab, New Green Cab, PDX Yellow Cab, Union Cab and United Independent Cab, and transportation network companies Lyft and Uber. The program is funded by a 50-cent fee charged for every taxi and TNC ride in Portland. The fee also covers safety inspections and helps defray the cost of rides for people with disabilities.

Safe Ride Home helps to achieve the City of Portland’s Vision Zero Action Plan’s goal of launching initiatives to reduce impaired driving. Impaired driving is a major contributor to death and injury on Portland streets. More than half of deadly crashes in Portland involve people who are intoxicated.
